It's a very friendly environment. The school doesn't help prepare you for college and isn't best with faculty. It's very dirty and the facilities are horrible. The teachers don't get respected enough. The sports teams are very good for a small school. The school wastes way too much money on Opera when no one likes the program. The kids are very different, half the school cares about their grades and the other half are drop outs. A lot of the kids go to the back staircase and smoke their vapes which is disgusting. Don't recommend the school at all!
After attending Academy of American Studies for four years, I have improved not only as a student, but also as a person. However, I gave this school a rating of "average" because it isn't as challenging as I expected. The Social Studies department does a great job at teaching the curriculum and making sure students are well prepared for not only regents exams, but college as well. However, the math and science department are a struggle. Some teachers confuse themselves teaching the class which ends up confusing everyone else. The school is way too uptight about certain rules and policies- for example, they lock the bathrooms for long periods of times to apparently prevent people from vaping in the bathrooms. However, students who have to use the bathroom now have to wait around 20 minutes to do so, which also creates long lines for bathrooms! Teachers have favorites and its very obvious but overall a decent school in new york city, especially when it comes to safety.
Academy is probably one of the most average schools in queens, really nothing too special about it. The teachers are nice but some are just terrible at teaching. There really isn't an in-between, and they like to choose favorites. Academics wise, the school offers the typical classes, many of which are poorly staffed. Again, nothing special, not too easy or too hard. There are a few activities and clubs but they are usually really small and don't have much student involvement. The resources needed are usually not given. Its a pretty safe school, but the building is shared with another highschool where stabbings and fights happen more then they should. Food is disgusting, but that's kinda expected.
