From Abington Friends School

Abington Friends School cultivates fearless, curious learning in a culture of intellectual and creative ambition. AFS has long prized experiential learning as central to the AFS experience. Recently, we have dramatically expanded opportunities for students to encounter a larger world of learning through the Center for Experiential Learning (CEL).

We value experiential learning because it extends our students’ reach into the world and fires their imagination for their place in that world. It breaks the age segregation of the high school experience by forming meaningful relationships with adults doing a range of work in the real world. It develops fluency in navigating a landscape of settings including neighborhoods, cultures and professional work places.

All of this programming is built on a foundation of Friends education at AFS that is experiential at its core, from the performing arts, to diversity, equity and inclusion work, the athletics program.

The Center for Experiential Learning

Rooted in the Quaker belief that experience is a student’s most powerful teacher, the Center fosters opportunities to connect beyond the school walls. Experiences range from cultural immersion trips to Paris, to environmental work in partnership with our local Watershed. My son and I moved to Pennsylvania on our own in the midst of a very difficult personal situation. Every single Abington Friends School staff member, and so many families, embraced us immediately and gave us both a lot of support and love. Although we were sad to leave our Quaker school in Maryland, we could not have asked for a better academically rich and emotionally supportive place to which to come "home." The struggles we had were overcome throughout the next few years, and now we are the ones embracing, welcoming and mentoring new families. If you want a positive, uplifting, loving, and caring setting -- on top of an outstanding academic environment, in which your child can learn, grow, and thrive then this is the place to be. Welcome, friends!

I was lucky enough to attend AFS for 10 years and can honestly say that all divisions--lower, middle, and upper--provided me with a fantastic education not only academically, but also in kindness and community. AFS's commitment to Quaker values is strong and real, and it comes through clearly in the curriculum and the ways in which material is presented. Over my years at AFS, it has become clear to me that equality, diversity, and respect for the individual are at the center of the school's mission. Yay AFS!
The preschool has been a magical land of learning for my four year old. She has thrived in this environment where she claims that her teacher is her best friend. She loves the playground, the assemblies, the resource classes and performing on stage each semester. She has been emerged into different subjects such as construction and building and the solar system and planets. She writes so well and can speak to adults clearly and articulately. Her love of reading and writing has expanded and she just loves to tell people what she is studying!
