This is a great research University that takes its time to focus on graduate students. I've always felt like a priority and felt like my research was of interest to my professors and peers. The courses are difficult, but I've found them all to be practically applicable to the field I want to to go into, so I never felt like I was learning something difficult for an irrelevant reason. The graduate assistants have a union, which is really nice. I frequently get invited to union meetings and graduate student association meetings so I feel like I am not alone as a student in my department. The campus is small, not the most beautiful but I'm here for the academics not the aesthetic. The campus is located near downtown Kalamazoo and promotes being involved in the community. As a graduate student I've gotten the opportunity to be a teaching assistant where we even took "field trips" to local institutions. Overall I would highly recommend Western if you are looking for a program in Michigan!
I am currently 4 classes into my academic program and feel that I am learning material applicable to my master’s field. I am in a highly flexible program, which I love. Most of my work is asynchronous which is extremely fitting for a full-time teacher. There was a class that had synchronous meetings, and I ended up dropping. I need a program (and classes) that are my pace. Western does that for me!
My advisors are absolutely amazing. The program is clearly written out and explained to every student. The professors are very knowledgeable of the subject and have first hand experience. There are quite a few tutors that are available to help those that need additional assistance. The professors have reasonable office hours in order to work with students on a one on one basis. Each professor has a clearly written syllabus. I love the Criminal Justice program at Western Michigan University!
