How will obtaining an advanced degree after 44 years in the workforce help to achieve my lifetime goals? Most people at age 74 would rather choose to sit back and enjoy retirement. Not me! Upon graduation from Albany Law School in 1976, my thoughts and goals included an LLM in Taxation. My legal aid service resulted in my name being placed on the Southern Poverty Law Center Wall of Tolerance in 2004 in recognition of efforts on behalf of Native Americans.
So here it is 44 years later and I am doing what is the most enjoyable part of law for me, taxation. Syracuse University welcomed me as a veteran with open arms. In a year and a half, I completed a double major in History and Economics graduating in December 1972 Summa cum Laude.
Washington University School of Law St. Louis, Missouri has an online program to achieve an LLM in Taxation in one year. The program is online which allows me to complete the coursework without having to move on campus.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this program. WashU offers a number of classes in various legal fields. I've taken courses in tort law, contracts, intellectual property law, legal negotiations, legal writing, legal procedures & court hearings. WashU is very flexible in terms of class times & schedules. This Masters program is 100% online. However, the virtual experience is phenomenal. This program is very diverse. Through this program, I am able to connect with different students each term; students from Asia, Europe, Africa and the different parts of the United States. It's like being in an actual class, but at home. The professors are astute, knowledgeable and professionally accomplished in the legal field. The program is fast paced, intriguing and fun. You can complete this program in one to two years. I started in January 2019 and I'm graduating in May 2020. CHOOSE WASHU! The investment is well worth it and WashU is one of the best law schools in the world.
I began my MSW at WashU in Fall 2020, during the pandemic, and they've handled it incredibly poorly. They funded testing for undergrads, but not grad students. Online classes have also widely varied in workload, many of which have been backloaded and more difficult. They removed breaks and, as an institution, have not lowered costs and have been shockingly unresponsive. Individual professors have done the best they can to accommodate students, but as there is no standard amongst the school and colleges within it, some classes have become less rewarding and more difficult. Overall, I'd like to see WashU dedicate more resources for grad students, cut costs where they can considering the pandemic, and allot appropriate breaks for students.
