Ursuline College has provided me an exceptional experience with their "Historic Preservation" Master of Arts program. There is a wide variety of career opportunities that are available which I think makes the program very unique and desirable. The support system is gratifying as each instructor provides you with a lot of viable resources. You get to experience real life opportunities and networking. This includes what you experience in the classroom right outside into the field. Furthermore, I spent my childhood enamored with art, travel and history. That the older I got, I became interested in Interior Design (which I received my bachelor's degree from Ursuline College). I knew I wanted to go back for my master's someday, and I thought that Historic Preservation would be a relevant bridge into the Interior design field. By mixing the "old" with the "new" is also very forthcoming in today's society. My goal is to continue to learn ways to preserve our past while securing our future.
The academics in this program are full of variety. Giving you comprehensive understanding of historic preservation and its role in protecting and enhancing our heritage while enriching our communities. From learning about Ohio's (and other places) past history, to the importance of historical figures that created the foundation of preserving our landmarks, sites, monuments and structures. Many tools are offered in this program that will help you grow and develop your work. "Adaptative Re-use" has been one of my favorite courses so far. You will easily learn and see the value in something that may look old and dilapidated to others. It is about what you want to survive into the next century. For example, I enjoyed going out into the field and touring an old factory or school that would be revitalized into housing. Seeing this type of preservation is compelling because it enriches the structure and the community in a way that is both equitable and sustainable.
Ursuline is a beautiful and quiet campus. It is a small community but full of resources. As a graduate student, I feel like we're not considered as much as the undergraduates when it comes to amenities, but it's still not that bad. It's a private school, so it has a private school price tag. But my program has a 100% job placement rate.
