This interdisciplinary program is designed for students who seek advanced opportunities in the expanding areas of the media industry, such as content distribution and media analytics. Students complete courses in the Miami Herbert Business School to strengthen their knowledge of business fundamentals, including managerial strategy, economics, and marketing. Students also take courses in the Dept. of Journalism and Media Management to apply business principles to media situations and evaluate how changing business models and new audience measurement techniques influence decision-making.

Learn how to use various media and methods of strategic communication to effectively promote organizations, products, and non-profit entities in an international marketplace. The MA in PR teaches students the fundamental elements central to the practice of public relations, built upon a foundation of understanding how, when, and why communication works. Our small class sizes, award-winning faculty, and professional networks give students a 360-degree education, allowing you to go beyond the classroom and explore the field of public relations through practical and professional perspectives.

The goals of the Master of Arts program in Communication Studies are to provide students with a rigorous educational experience, to develop an advanced understanding of the human communication process, to increase awareness of the interdisciplinary nature of the communication field, and to develop oral, written, critical thinking, and research skills. Students complete coursework in persuasion, interpersonal, intercultural, organizational, and health communication together with research methods applicable to these areas.

The MFA in Interactive Media is a STEM graduate program that prepares students to innovate through understanding and experiencing the business, academic, and cultural contexts of emerging technologies. The program prepares a new generation of innovators in the field of interaction design and explores the use of tech, design, human behavior, and their impact on communication. The program trains students to research, prototype, design, and build projects in business, social, academic, and cultural contexts.

The Documentary M.F.A. program emphasizes the social responsibility of the storyteller and explores the standards and ethics of journalism. Graduates from this program will gain knowledge in how to cast a light on under-represented issues or topics of social relevance in ways that are visceral and impactful. Anchoring the first year, is the International Production Outreach Program, a one-week, service-learning experience abroad involving student travel and production in the spring semester. M.F.A. in Documentary students are paired with non-profit groups in Central or South America.

The M.F.A. in Motion Pictures guides students to advance their technical proficiency and critical thinking while learning innovative narrative skills. Students are encouraged to concentrate in more than one area of specialization: production, producing and/or screenwriting. The M.F.A. in Motion Pictures program offers a comprehensive curriculum in the creative uses of technology for narrative and documentary creation, positioning students with the business practices needed to bring their work to the expanding marketplace.

The program is an intensive combination of academic study and hands-on practice designed to develop competitive, high-level, cross-platform digital storytelling skills appropriate for today’s media landscape. Students take a common core of courses designed to provide a foundation in all aspects of contemporary journalism. Beyond that, students have the opportunity to focus their work in a particular area of study, including broadcast journalism, news and feature writing, and various aspects of multimedia journalism.
