I began my graduate degree in the middle of the Pandemic, which has made connecting with my cohort difficult. Despite this, I have greatly enjoyed my experience here thus far. My program has put an emphasis on learning about the local culture, wherever you are, especially as you are conducting research. I have greatly appreciated this outlook, as most other places seem to focus only on the science and obtaining "western" knowledge. I also love my professors, particularly my advisor! Plus, I live on an island. Can't get much better than that!
That said, the University of Hawai'i at Hilo is not for everyone. If you decide to attend here, come with an open mind and be willing to learn about, respect, and embrace the people and place you are immersing yourself in.

I am enrolled in the Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Sciences program. They offer two tracks: Thesis and Internship. Some classes cross over, while others are more catered to their specific track. I am on the internship track. It is wonderful, and in some ways I find it more helpful long term in my career, as it is setting me up with connections to leaders in my field as I have pursued internships with them. I also feel that I am getting a well-rounded education in conservation, not only in marine mammal science, but other marine sciences and terrestrial conservation as well.
UH at Hilo is a small university nestled between the makai and the mauna. We are the little brother to UH at Manao, and possess limited resources compared to our big brother campus. Small class sizes with wonderful professors. Lots of recreational opportunities around the island, although the night-life is essentially non-existent.
