At the moment, I am doing my Ph.D at CU in geophysics, studying landslides using machine learning and satellite imagery, as well as other natural hazards. My program is one of the top rated Earth Sciences programs in the world, and there are many amazing professors, researchers, and opportunities to grow your skills. On the bad side, the area (Boulder) is expensive and CU does not care about it. Housing is bad and limited, everyone is white, and overall not inviting. Many of my friends that are people of color say how they have had bad experiences in this community, and I also have once I share my name and that I am from Romania.
Overall, my university and the community had good resources, but it is not where I want to be after I finish my degree. It is a beautiful location for nature, but the people here are snotty and uptight. Nevertheless, I am appreciative of this opportunity -- I love my research and am learning a lot and would not want to do any other work!

I’ll start with the worst, being away from my family. The weather was a change from the sunny California to the cold winters in Colorado. The best thing was being the first generation of my family to graduate not only in one but to majors psychology and sociology. My family coming from a low income based and struggling with four other siblings was hard but pushed me harder for an education to pursue my dreams. My mother struggled with mental illness and addiction that almost cost me my dreams. Seeing her struggle with addiction and coming out of the darkness to become a strong sober influencer in my life help shape me in the my education goals.
Amazing school with dedicated and highly educated professors. Beautiful campus where I was happy to spend my undergrad years, the school also has a considerable amount of funding which made accesses to certain programs and my undergrad experience e a lot easier.
