The master’s degree program prepares students for research and development careers in biomedical industry and further research at the doctorate level. Students completing their MS degrees will graduate with a high level of competence in the application and characterization of various forms of biomaterials; the acquisition and processing of medical signals and images; he computation and simulation of phenomena in biomechanical systems; transferring their understanding of biomaterials, biomechanics, and signal processing to the creation of new applications.

The Master of Science degree in Construction Engineering & Management (MSCEM) is a flexible, user friendly, and affordable online master’s program that allows participants to maintain employment while advancing their knowledge and skills. Program coursework is designed with industry input and provides students with essential technical and management skills required by professionals in the industry today.

The Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering (MSIE) is and on-campus degree program stressing advanced industrial engineering practice and research. Program coursework is designed to strengthen technical skills that allow students to work as specialists in areas of industrial engineering such as operations research, production and manufacturing and ergonomics. In addition, the degree will provide the research background needed to transition into Ph.D. degree programs.

The M.S./MES degree offers an education in the broad area of materials. Students pursuing this degree will expand their knowledge and understanding of the science and technology of materials synthesis, behavior, and production. Graduates of the program formulate solutions to materials problems through the use of multi-disciplinary approaches made possible with a broad background in basic materials science and engineering coupled with an area of specialization.

Nanoscience and nanoengineering focus on visualizing, manipulating, and delineating the laws governing all phases of matter on the scale of one billionth of a meter, roughly one hundred thousandth the diameter of a human hair. Nanotechnology refers to the specific technologies enabled by nanoscience and nanoengineering. The MS in nanoscience and nanoengineering is available with a non-thesis option only.

The PhD program prepares students for a career in research, advancing the frontiers of biomedical science and engineering with attention to generating new ideas for commercialization. Students completing their PhD degrees will graduate with a higher level of expertise in transferring their understanding to the development of new knowledge and applications of one of the program’s focus areas: Bioimaging Biomaterials Biomechanics and computational modeling Assistive technology/rehabilitation engineering Tissue engineering

The Civil and Environmental Engineering PhD (CENE PhD) degree program provides opportunities for students to gain expertise in a broad range of research areas that support state initiatives, closely tie to campus research thrusts, and align with federal funding sources such as NSF, DoE, DoD, USDA and NASA. Doctoral students work with faculty advisors mentors to develop personalized programs of study and make significant contributions to the Civil and Environmental Engineering body of knowledge through their research.

The PhD program offers students the opportunity to expand knowledge and understanding of materials production, behavior, and applications. Students undertake multidisciplinary approaches to the solution of materials-related problems. Because such problems are found in every science and engineering discipline, applicants have considerable flexibility in the selection of the department in which to pursue dissertation research, within the confines of the applicant‘s academic preparation and interests. Candidates will study either a science or engineering emphasis within the MES Ph.D. program.

The Ph.D. in Data Science and Engineering is a joint collaborative program between Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, and Mathematics departments. Data science is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field that involves researchers from many STEM disciplines with applications found throughout science and engineering.

The Nanoscience and Nanoengineering PhD program offers a research-intensive degree focused on nanoscience and nanotechnology, with current emphases in nano-electronics and nano-photonics; nano-imaging and bio-nanotechnology; and nano-composites and their applications. A multi-disciplinary core curriculum is taken by students from diverse science and engineering backgrounds. These “core” courses are intended to introduce students to contemporary topics in nanoscience and nanotechnology and to initiate a cross-disciplinary approach to research and learning.

In our program, students are required to take both chemical engineering and biology/biological engineering graduate courses to fulfill their degree requirement. At a minimum, students will take two courses from the following biological engineering topics: biochemical engineering, industrial microbiology and biotechnology, metabolic engineering, biocatalysis, bioseparations, and molecular biology. This structure ensures that graduates have the foundation and skill set to be proficient as both a chemical and biological engineers.

The mission of the physics Ph.D. program is to provide students with quality graduate instruction and research experiences that will prepare them for various career options in academia, industry, and at national labs. First-year students may be teaching assistants or research assistants; teaching load is light in order to allow an early start in research. Important milestones in the course of our program are the qualifying exam, typically taken after completing the required coursework, and the comprehensive exam, in which students defend their dissertation research scope and plan.
