Smith College Reviews
Rating 4 out of 5 4 reviews
I loved the fact that all coursework was pass/fail. Instead of having to "prove yourself" by taking exams, you simply had to show proficiency. This allows students to emphasize what will best suit them in their careers. For example, I remember taking an exam that consisted of choosing from two of three essay prompts. I intentionally chose the most difficult two because I knew I would benefit from pushing myself and the instructor's feedback, and I wasn't concerned about shooting for an A.
The SC SSW curriculum is intense but it’s doable — it’s somewhat diverse but like most PWIs it centers whiteness. Many students and faculty come to the program lacking cultural humility, which causes harm to many BIPOC students. The school is located in a small, white, fake liberal town. The antiracism commitment is a marketing ploy that causes more harm than good — facilitating an emotionally intense learning environment for many SOC.
Smith College School for Social Work is a clinically focused program that offers you twice the internship hours as most social work programs. There is a strong emphasis on learning from other students and taking advantage of outside the classroom experience is pivotal. It' a strong program and I've frequently found people respond impressively upon discovering that I attended Smith.
