Middlebury College
Graduate Student: I attended the Bread Loaf School of English, and it absolutely changed my life. I got to spend my summers in the Vermont mountains, surrounded my similarly passionate English nerds. There were constant community building activities, and the extracurricular learning opportunities never ended. I got to hear poets like Martín Espada sing their poems, and professors like Oscar Eustis (producer of Hamilton) took part in every aspect of the program. I was taught by an award-winning novelisy and a critical philosopher of African American poetry, and by other professors whose "normal" jobs include teaching at Yale, Princeton, and beyond. I spent a summer in Oxford in the UK, where I saw 12 plays in just 8 weeks to study the ways texts go from the page to the stage. I took a poetry class that led to my first published piece of writing. I could go on forever about the magic of being on that mountaintop.
