Alum: The ENST (Environmental Studies Masters Program) at CSUF is great for the flexibility of having mostly evening classes and the ability to chose a project, thesis, or a test-out option. A student can complete this program in two years if attending fulltime for at least 3 semesters. I would recommend that the student have an advisor and project or thesis idea already planned out before attending this program so that the student will be ready to begin their research as soon as they enter the program. This greatly improves the outcome of the experience and lessens the stress of having to find an advisor while taking classes. I do feel that the program is more worthwhile when a student is completing graduate research verse just taking an exit exam. The exit exam is not something I would recommend for those who want the full graduate school experience.

Graduate Student: The fisheries department provides a lot of opportunities for the small, rural location. There are frequently interesting guest lectures. The faculty is knowledgeable and approachable. Though they can't promise extra funding sources, there are many side-jobs and scholarships just for graduate students within the department. The graduate community is supportive and friendly. Arcata is a small town with enough variety to offer while you are a busy graduate student. If you like the ocean, there is plenty to do, and if you like rivers, we are not far from multiple beautiful rivers.
My only wish is that there was more diversity within the department. There are currently no women in the fisheries department faculty. Students in the fisheries department are mostly white and male, but that is slowly changing and there should be more mentors for people of color and women joining the field.
