Master's Student: The biggest benefit I've noticed so far about the Data Science Master's program at Stanford is the relevance and quality of the material I am learning as it pertains to working in industry. The curriculum seems to cover all of the material necessary to become an entry level data scientist, with good breadth and depth -- I can verify this from working in data science internships during the summer. Also, Stanford is the Mecca of Statistics. In just one year, I have taken several classes from influential academics who have written textbooks and done research that everyone references in industry and academia. The people you will learn from here are often the people who invented fundamental tools and building blocks: Rob Tibshirani, who co-authored Elements of Statistical Learning and was an early developer of Lasso Regression; Joe Romano, who co-authored Testing Statistical Hypotheses; Stephen Boyd, who developed the field of Convex Optimization.... This program involves a lot of experiential learning, reading, role-plays, and seminar discussion. I think there could be more professors of color in this program. There are some professors who feel uncomfortable and avoid questions that include multicultural competency. There are some professors who graduated from this program and teaches students what they wish they learned. I trust these professors more as they have more hands-on experiences. This school in general is really expensive, and there are not enough international students, possibly due to mental health stigma. I feel confident in my decision to complete my master's of science degree, especially at University of San Francisco. I am anticipating on learning a lot about the program and the Sports Management industry through the very detailed curriculum. Additionally, I am anticipating on accepting multiple internships in which I will be gaining direct knowledge and insight on different aspects of the Sports Management Industry. Alum: The best part is that most of my professors at SMC were very accessible and willing to meet to discuss concerns about the class. Class sizes are small in comparison to neighboring colleges within the Bay Area which is a plus as you get to know mostly everyone in the class. Not so good: My concentration in my program was Computer Science. During the time that I was there, the CS program was not as developed so I didn't get much exposure to a lot of topics. Master's Student: Go in with an open mind. READ INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSIGNMENTS, all of them. The evaluation of your work is not an evaluation of you. Your work can and will improve. Panic and stress are the enemy of doing good work. Do not procrastinate and remove distractions, the professos will be able to tell if you turn in sloppy work. It is better to budget extra time for assignments and put in a little extra effort than it is to do things in a rush. Get plenty of sleep, and exercise for an hour a day if you can. This coursework involves a lot of sitting at a desk and drawing or working on the computer. You have to set aside time for some exercise and get away from the screen otherwise you will begin to feel like garbage. Feeling like garbage will negatively affect your work and that is what you are evaluated on. Current Master's student: I am in the Speech Language Pathology graduate program. What makes the program great is its flexibility. They offer both 2 and 3 year programs. If a student has a life event occur that interferes with their ability to graduate with their intended class, the supervisors work with them to lengthen their time so that they are still able to complete the program. The program also centers highlighting cultural humility. On top of that, all the professors are very approachable and understanding. SFCM is located in one of the greatest cities in the world, gives students access to the world-renowned San Francisco Symphony, as well as the SF Opera, SF Ballet, and SF Jazz. I love the community found within the walls of the Conservatory. The students are very friendly and supportive and the administration really cares about its students. In addition to performing, there are tons of opportunities to teach or gain arts administration experience. Alum: UCSF nursing boasts some amazing sites for students to rotate. This is becoming more and more rare as graduate schools are starting to require students to find their own sites. San Francisco and the greater bay area have some truly excellent hospitals. The classes covered many cutting edge topics. Doctoral Student: So far, my experience at Palo Alto University has been slightly underwhelming. Despite the mode of course delivery switching back to in person for nearly all California schools, PAU has yet to make the switch back to in person course delivery, which has seemingly detracted from my education quality. That said, the professors at PAU are amazing and invested I the students, making the program's shortcomings more worth it. The online delivery format has been relatively organized, but again, it does seem that the quality of education is negatively impacted from switching from an in person learning experience to an online one.... Graduate Student: LCCW is a great Graduate program. It is run very tightly and it's a very heavy course load driven program. You always have the option of slowing down your program, although that's not advertised, but sometimes it's necessary. I wish the administration would quit getting rid of really good and talented instructors!! There are amazingly brilliant instructors at LCCW!
