Current Doctoral student: The faculty and staff are wonderful and the intellectual life in the department is incredible: I feel like I have been intellectually nourished since I started this program. I have gotten wonderful funding opportunities that have allowed me to travel and am currently receiving excellent career search preparation. However, the department's logistical relationship with larger bureaucratic bodies on campus is fraught, confusing, and stressful to navigate. This is not the fault of anyone in the department, but is still something that can affect the mental health of students forced to deal with it. I believe that empathy training -- especially for the benefit of interactions with neurodivergent, chronically ill, or nontraditional students -- would behoove the department enormously.... Master's Student: Great school. I start in the fall, but already I feel like a part of the family. I have been introduced to my graduate department and peers in my cohort. Shortly after orientation I was given a mentor to help guide me on the way. Long Beach is such a beautiful campus. There are so many nice buildings and it is such a clean campus. I am excited to obtain my Masters in Social work from this campus. Long Beach is a great place to live. It is in close to both the OC and South Bay areas. We have it all - weather, entertainment, plenty of outdoor activities. Unfortunately, houses are smaller, older and more expensive than a lot of other cities. In addition, California is losing business that paid decent salaries and not attracting new ones. So if you have a house and a job, it's a nice place to live. Attending school makes it such an awesome city.The diversity, the staff who have helped me through and so far my Professors! Awesome campus and I can't help but mention the diversity!... Master's Student: It is my first semester at Biola and I have nothing negative to say about this University. I love that people that attend here are so nice and are willing to help each other literally with everything. Once you are a student here you have an opportunity to log into the "Student Chat" where it basically allows you to chat with all the students from Biola. These students are amazingly polite, helpful, and I love that most share bible quotes for the day. I also like the fact that you are truly reminded that God is everywhere just by reading the posts that the students create. It's overall a great environment and im glad I can be a part of it.... Current Master's student: Azusa Pacific University is a great school and I'm so blessed to have the opportunity to attend. They made it possible for me to continue working while attending school and many graduate programs can't offer that. The classes along with their workload is definitely manageable. Currently I am working and attending school in the event, and it most certainly is do able. They have great resources on campus that is available to all students. The professors and the staff at APU are amazing! They are very much supportive of their students, and they truly care about you. They are so patient and kind with you and are always willing to help. Master's Student: My experience so far has been short, but it has been going well so far. The school administrators have kept us in the know so far and the teachers are very knowledgeable! I am taking an online masters program which I can see being very difficult to keep organized and keep the students happy but the teachers are communicating with us constantly. The school sets the students up with their own email address and student center online. There is an online platform that the students and teachers access to post lectures, submit homework assignments, and a place where the students can ask their peers questions. The staff administration for the most part gets back to you. Beyond that the lectures and homework are challenging but fair. I'm taking two classes and the teachers seem to be in sync with each other to allow the students enough time to get everything done. Master's Student: Anytime I need help I get the answer right away, people are helpful and respond really fast. If I call, and no one picks up I will for sure get the call back. if so don’t understand something, I would just call and the person will explain everything and make sure I would understand. It is really helpful when you are apply for new school and sometimes it is stressful and frustrating, but having help from University of La Verne made my experience is so Mach easier on me and made my choice to join the University as the right one and I don’t regret choosing the school and even happy that I did. When there is a lot of schools to choose from, when I applied I would hope that I would be happy with my advisors because this is the first impression of the schools, advices are, not the professors or other things , because everything starts with applying and help from people that are there for you to apply the right way, to register for the classes and make sure you are satisfied with the times... Current Master's student: Something I like most about my program is the opportunity to be trained in both k-12 and college level counseling. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with an amazing cohort and developing strong relationships with professors and colleagues. The course subjects are crucial to our future experience as counselors, such as crisis intervention, group psychotherapy, development and curriculum, and multicultural counseling. I’ve enjoyed being able to gain experience in the field and work directly with children at the elementary level so far. I have one more year left before obtaining my degree so I am excited for what I will learn next! One thing I do wish is that all graduate programs would consider is the financial struggle of having to complete unpaid internship hours, working to pay rent/bills, the commute, taking classes at night, as well as making time to care for family and our own mental/physical health. Alum: I fell in love with Cal Poly when I visited the campus at 12 midnight one night when I was with a friend hanging out and talking about prospective colleges. I love horses and I saw that they had a horse farm. I was born in a small third world country called Belize and the atmosphere at Cal Poly just reminded me of back home. I love that they had a farmers market where I could get food that came from the farm at school. I love that they were diverse and the school was not too far from my mom in LA. I met my best friend at Cal Poly! We are two days apart for our birthdays. We are still friends till this day and we celebrate our birthdays together every year no matter where we are. I made a friend and sister for life!. I don’t hate anything about Cal Poly. I believe that our experiences are what we make it. I met some nice, studious people at Cal Poly that I still keep in contact with since most of them are Biology or Social Sciences majors. I would definitely go back to Cal Poly :)... Read 38 reviews

Current Doctoral student: I am apart of the General Counseling Psychology Program at MSMU-LA. Our courses are tailored to push us as students to learn and apply counseling theories in our work with diverse populations in higher education, non-profit organizations, or other. Our courses are offered and paired up per semester to compliment one another for example Counseling theories course and Diverse Populations course are paired up because both can be applied to each other's course material. Our professors work around our schedules to attend to our needs and early on they begin preparing us to consider a Thesis project. They advice us and offer counseling work or TA opportunities as well. As graduate students we are allowed to be creative in our projects, it lives up to the standards of conference classroom style. With the psychology counseling we have 3 programs MFT, GCP, and ENLACES certificate program. We all get to integrate in classes, but still be apart of our own cohort group.... Read 36 reviews
