Master's Student: I was disappointed to see that many scholarship programs funded by the school weren't available for my specific department regarding my field hours I would be completing in my 2nd year. I'm worried since I work full time and am the main financial provider for my family, but I am really excited about getting experience in my community! I have loved going to campus and meeting new people, especially since they live near LA, and they also want to make new friends to attend football games etc. I got involved in the Latinx Caucus of Social Work, this has given me the opportunity to start connecting more in my community and other students to feel welcomed and involved as well. I will be planning events on campus and outreaching to local non-university related members to increase education and be a resource. Graduate Student: I love my professors, the staff, and the available resources. The budget cuts have been really challenging -- all of the Public Administrations online journals have been removed from the library (you can still access them via inter-library loan), and a ceiling tile collapsed in a class room (the Urban & Public Affairs building is old). Despite the budget cuts, my professors have been outstanding, professional, incredibly knowledgeable and devoted to being the best possible.... Read 2 reviews

Current Master's student: The graduate social work program is unique at Portland State University in that it practically predates the university itself. There is no better program for social work in Oregon, despite new programs popping up at neighboring universities and in WA and CA, the overwhelming majority of social workers Oregon come from our program. This provides excellent networking opportunities, but also means you are in sync with the wider field. Graduate Student: The counseling department is staffed by some really passionate and enthusiast professors. Most of my classroom experiences have been very enriching, challenging, and supportive. The department is underfunded, which could do a lot to resolve current issues. UNO as a whole is a pretty decent school for the tuition.... Read 1 review
