Master's Student: Grades don't really matter...they do, but they don't. Teachers want to see you succeed and will help out, while still making sure you learn what you need to do. Unlike undergraduate courses where the schedule is basically defined by the accreditation board or whatever, grad classes are different. If you want to spend more time on a topic, the professor can do so. You often take a lot of similar classes as other students in your lab, so working on homework or projects together makes a lot of sense and is natural. There's not a whole lot of competition to get the highest grade in class because as grad students we are all in the same boat.
