Point Loma Nazarene University is the perfect school for anyone who is dedicated to creating a career out of writing. The program will challenge an individuals writing effectively so that upon graduation they are talented writers ready to step into a career in editing, publishing, professional writing, or teaching. The professors in the program take their time to get to know every student on a personal and professional level that they may help every student grow in academia. The program also carries over very well into a graduate writing program, which I am starting this fall and am very excited for.
Although my program was completed during the height of the Covid shutdown, all of the professors made themselves available and easily adapted to the situation. All professors were interested in their subjects and made learning fun and laidback as one would hope for a program like this. With this program, you learn as much as your effort allows. You can come out of the program learning nothing, or you can feel prepared to teach in a classroom setting right away.
PLNU is an incredible school where you will more learn how to be a good person than how to succeed in your field. That isn't to say you won't learn to succeed in your field, but you will learn the importance of being a good citizen over your career. And you're right next to the ocean.
At PLNU, I stepped into myself. Primarily through my General Education classes, I was taught not what to think about but how to think. In other words, I was taught what to give my attention to and how to give it. My teachers knew my name and cared about me deeply. They wanted me to succeed in my career, but more importantly, they wanted me to succeed as a human being, affirming others in their humanity and existence.
When it comes to my specific major, things weren't as great. I experienced a lack of guidance and appreciation for my love of writing and arts. Our program was small and could have received more attention in general.
Overall, my experience at PLNU molded me into the person I am today, and I believe it will continue to do so.

So far the classes have been very flexible. I have been able to attend night classes as well as online which has allowed me to spend more time at home with my son and pregnant wife. I am also able to maintain a part-time job as a substitute teacher. The downside is the tuition cost because it is a private university. I feel as though the information and tools I am learning through my studies are setting me up for success when it comes to my future as a teacher.

The teachers really care about you. Everyone knows everyone and professors are great at emails and giving feedback. It’s a small community in the masters program world, but everyone becomes like family and are all so nice and helpful.
The MACC program provides curriculum that meets state licensure requirements for LMFT or LPCC. It is an on-ground program that meets at a graduate campus (separate from the main campus which houses undergraduate programs and a few graduate programs). Students have access to resources available at any of the university's campuses. Courses meet twice a week in the afternoons and evenings, cohort sizes are 30-40 students and classes are kept to 15-20, with practicum courses even smaller.
Students are provided with student support including an assigned student success counselor (whose objective is to promote the student's personal wellbeing during the course of the program), and a financial aid counselor. All program faculty are very available to students throughout the program and even after. MACC program provides a pre-practicum course that allows students to practice counseling skills in a video-recorded and supervised environment prior to entering the practicum portion of the program

My academic experience so far, has been wonderful. Classes are small, and professors are available to help when needed. I feel like I can go to them for anything, and they are always willing to help. Individual support is such an integral part of Loma life, and I am so thankful for it. In addition to this, classes have been challenging and have stretched my creativity to become a better teacher.
The academic program was rigorous, yet manageable. Although not ideal, I was still able to work a full-time job and complete my part-time practicum work during my program, and made decent grades during this time. The coursework was applicable to skills I was learning, and often supplemented the work I was doing during my practicum.
I had a good experience, overall. I started this program during it’s first year, and took a break from grad school, due to personal reasons. When I returned a year later, they had already made the program even better (and I already thought it was really good when I first started) so it was a smooth transition to jump back in and get caught up. I am a therapist now, and received excellent training through this program and the affiliates that they used to train us in an external practicum. I would recommend this school for anyone looking to pursue a degree in mental health for Clinical Counseling.
The master in education program is well-rounded and exposes future effective teachers to diversity and inclusion.
I love the community aspect of Point Loma. The small class sizes are great for more one on one with your instructors. You aren't just a number at PLNU. They treat you great and want you to learn and find out who you are and who you are called to be. Most instructors have an open door policy and love when you meet with them. They want you asking questions and obtaining a great deal of knowledge from the professors. They also have state of the art equipment to conduct research.
The coursework is engaging and useful to your career. They set you up for great success in the workforce. They teach you to apply research methods to clinical settings.
I absolutely love the professors in my MSN course. They are very professional and caring. They understand that students are adults with many work related and personal responsibilities. They are flexible to support the students as much as possible.
Most of the course work were engaging and I learned a lot. In graduate school, they do expect us to be independent learners and prepare ahead of class. So, as long as I stayed up to date with my studying and assignments, I had very good experience and good learning outcomes. The discussion boards- I did not find them as helpful and mainly task oriented and busy work instead of truly learning from it. What I found most busy work was having to do discussion boards, wait for people to post, reply to 2-3 peers and then wait again to reflect on what was responded to your post. I thought it was very time consuming and did not learn from it. Only busy work.
My overall experience with Point Loma Nazarene University has been excellent. The price tag is pretty high but the quality of the education you get here is well worth the cost.

The coursework is easy to apply in my field and across any business. Most professors are very open to feedback and genuinely care that we learn and understand the concepts.
I am currently pursuing my MBA at Point Loma, and it has already been such an enriching experience! This was my first time attending a private university, and I wasn't sure what to expect. My experience halfway through the program is that I am being challenged and have supportive professors with a solid business background that are helping me level up in my professional career. The program is structured in a cohort setting, so we are moving through the program together. This is nice since we get to know our peers better, and it facilitates an environment where we support each other. If you are considering PLNU, I highly recommend it.
