Northwestern University Graduate Reviews

I absolutely love Northwestern. Even though I’m attending their online program and live a couple of states away, I still feel connected to my university. Over the past year, my professors, academic advisors, and other course leads have been extremely resourceful and I can tell they want me to succeed. The online campus is easy to use and there are people ready to help me 24/7 if I need it. Despite only meeting once a week via webcam, I feel connected to my classmates and love getting to know them better through class and group projects. I’ve learned so much about mental health counseling and I feel that I’ll be ready for my career when I graduate. I truly feel that I made the best decision when I picked Northwestern for my graduate career!

I was in the School of Communication at the graduate level; the main perk was that through my program we got full funding (tuition waiver, health insurance waiver, + stipend). Looking back, I'm not sure if it was worth it. Professors work in the field but are often away from the classroom, leaving gaps in coursework that students are expected to make up on their own. Support from professors in minimal and relies on you working in their style. Party scene and student life are all geared to undergrads (grad students are all overworked, so no partying). Grad student unions are nonexistent. Rent is high in the area surrounding the campus, and area is not safe. If you're lucky you can make a connection to move you ahead in your career, but there isn't much help on that end from professors.
The campus is very beautiful, situated in the affluent Evanston area where there are many working professionals and families. The food in the area is okay, because everything is so spread out you need to walk quite a bit to satisfy late night munchies. The reputation of the university speaks for itself. You’re paying for the “name brand” aka Northwestern since it is a big ten school and one of the best in the nation. Overall, it is a good university but not necessarily a party school if that is what you’re looking for.
