Maurice A. Deane School of Law Reviews

Coming from outside New York, it was jarring to attend a school where everyone felt like they had grown up nearby. The student community feels very conservative and clique-ish, with small groups forming quickly after orientation. The administration is goal-oriented and focused on improving bar passage and job statistics without concerning themselves with improving student life and well-being. The faculty range widely, from newer professors who are very passionate about their students and the subject matter to more tenured professors who feel stuck in their ways. I'm not quite sure what I expected coming to law school, but it certainly wasn't this.

At first, I didn't know anyone and from the social aspect, I felt a bit out of place. Over time, however, this changed and I have made some wonderful friends. What I really loved was the academic support the students receive from the professors. There is a lot of competition for scholarships, and this spring I lost some of my original scholarship. Sadly, the online learning due to the coronavirus resulted in pass/fail grades so I lost my opportunity to bring up my grades this spring. Ironically, I suffered from the coronavirus this spring as well but I managed to keep up with my school work. As far as what I would change, it would be the tuition. Thousands of us will be suffering with student loans. Our monthly payments will be higher than our parent's mortgages. Would I say my degree is worth that price? I love the law and I want to help people who can't help themselves such as the elderly and special needs children. Will the price tag be worth it? Time will tell.
I absolutely love the academic program. The professors are wonderful and they make the classes so interesting. They are preparing me for practicing law when I graduate. Also, they really care about the students. The school also is giving me an opportunity to participate in the Veteran's Law Clinic this fall. I will be able to have my own clients but I will be supervised by my professor. This is an invaluable experience since it can help students prepare for actual law practices. I appreciate this opportunity, as well as every experience I was able to have at the law school.
