I have yet to enroll for Fall 2023 after receiving my acceptance letter due to a delay in my need-based financial aid from JHU. However the Homewood Campus in Baltimore is beautiful and my Student Advisor, Alexis has been extremely helpful in initiating my enrollment process and answering all of my questions in a timely matter. My intended Advanced Academic Program is the accelerated (2 semester), dual-modality, 40-credit M.S. in Biotechnology, Biodefense concentration. All of the anticipated course subjects are diverse and there's even a customizable core lab course on campus (at least until Summer 2024). I can't wait and I wish you all the best in your search for academic programs or professional certifications.
I completed the MS in Biotechnology program at Johns Hopkins in 2016. While there were some really standout classes and professors (Advanced Cell Biology, Virology, Neuroscience) my overall experience was that the instruction, use of technology, and content was uneven. I had some graduate level classes that were little more than regurgitating from the textbook, some that required very little critical thinking about systems interaction and instead tested inane minutia from the book, and amen some where ‘discussions’ on the class forum, were basically just a bunch of people responding to their own separate questions an hour before the assignment was due. In terms of content learning, I have taken classes at the local university that leveraged many more tools (like molecular modeling software) than Hopkins did. It may have improved since I attended, but in 2016, it was clear not all of the professors were leveraging the technology well. Comparatively expensive for what was taught!
So far, it has been wonderful! Especially since it is all online, it allows me to continue to work and pursue higher education.
