Krieger School of Arts & Sciences Reviews
Rating 4.2 out of 5 10 reviews
I completed the MS in Biotechnology program at Johns Hopkins in 2016. While there were some really standout classes and professors (Advanced Cell Biology, Virology, Neuroscience) my overall experience was that the instruction, use of technology, and content was uneven. I had some graduate level classes that were little more than regurgitating from the textbook, some that required very little critical thinking about systems interaction and instead tested inane minutia from the book, and amen some where ‘discussions’ on the class forum, were basically just a bunch of people responding to their own separate questions an hour before the assignment was due. In terms of content learning, I have taken classes at the local university that leveraged many more tools (like molecular modeling software) than Hopkins did. It may have improved since I attended, but in 2016, it was clear not all of the professors were leveraging the technology well. Comparatively expensive for what was taught!
I have experienced much more academic rigor at he loco university where I took some prerequisite chemistries classes. Many of the students in the program did not appear to be performing at a particularly high academic level, so I experienced frustration not being challenged enough- or being challenged by default because of the significant busy work in statistics and cell biology classes. I didn’t feel that I had to develop a lot of critical thinking skills, though again, some classes were better than others and a lot depended on the professor teaching the class. I would have thought a school like Hopkins would be leaps and bounds ahead of free online platforms like coursera, but I’ve taken higher quality classes there...
I completed my undergraduate education at Brown University and found the program at Hopkins generally unengaging and not a good use of my time. If given the chance to go back, I probably would not do this program and would opt for other online programs.

What I like most about Johns Hopkins University Krieger School of Arts and Sciences is the presence of professionalism and genuine consciousness. Not only are the classes highly interesting and inclusive but also they are conveniently laid out so no matter where you are in the world you can complete your degree on your own time. All the classes are provided asynchronously so no 3:00am wake ups for lecture. Professors are organized and available with plenty of opportunity to connect with fellow students. This is only my first semester but I am feeling very confident in my commitment to Johns Hopkins University Krieger School of Arts and Sciences Advanced Academics Program.
