I earned a bachelor's degree in art education. IUPUI has the Herron School of Art. Oh it is a commuting school, the camaraderie and positive atmosphere among students was invigorating. The art Ed program was comprehensive in what to share with students, though it would have been nice to know more about school politics. The art history and art practicum and teaching practicum all left me feeling quite prepared to teach. The school of education had a different atmosphere, but taught us how to teach and train children. The practical classes going into classrooms to observe, ask questions, and eventually to teach or incredibly helpful and very available. My student teaching opportunity was difficult, but truly prepared me for the classroom.
Absolutely loved my graduate experience at IUPUI! Prior to attending, I spent a semester a different university and quit because I wasn't satisfied with my experience. So I even had other graduate school experiences to compare IUPUI to, and IUPUI was above and beyond my expectations. I am so happy with my choice to attend this school. I appreciated the diversity of classes I was able to take which supplemented my learning in my main program. Furthermore, IUPUI is an excellent university in offering on-campus opportunities to learn about social justice, with regular workshops and excellent guest-speakers you can attend throughout the academic year. Couldn't recommend this school any more!
Disability services were very poor and inadequate. My own department accepted my accommodations without paperwork because the disability services offered at school were a pain to organize and set up each semester. Adding new accommodations was burdensome and required several hoops and meetings with people who did not care about you or your success.
I had my student rights violated several times and never received an apology when the "perps" were punished. I had to find out the result a year later from a third party who was a bit biased.
Got kicked out of a program due to a recent diagnosis of several disabilities that impacted my attendance and ability to learn. While I will admit to the fact I made several mistakes, I left an information discovery meeting wishing I had brought a lawyer I was told I would not need. I was also not informed of the "greviences" prior to the meeting--which is also a violation of my rights.
