Humboldt State University Graduate Reviews

5 reviews
The fisheries department provides a lot of opportunities for the small, rural location. There are frequently interesting guest lectures. The faculty is knowledgeable and approachable. Though they can't promise extra funding sources, there are many side-jobs and scholarships just for graduate students within the department. The graduate community is supportive and friendly. Arcata is a small town with enough variety to offer while you are a busy graduate student. If you like the ocean, there is plenty to do, and if you like rivers, we are not far from multiple beautiful rivers.
My only wish is that there was more diversity within the department. There are currently no women in the fisheries department faculty. Students in the fisheries department are mostly white and male, but that is slowly changing and there should be more mentors for people of color and women joining the field.

I receive personalized and dedicated support from my professors. Instructors are particularly focused on engaging students and teaching them practical skills. However, there is a lack of focus, as a university, on graduate students. Grad students are not given dedicated office space, and teaching opportunities are relatively scarce, compared to many larger research universities. That being said, the graduate experience is rich and fulfilling.
Humboldt State is a naturally beautiful campus located in the middle of Northern Californian Redwoods, a 10 minute drive from the Pacific Ocean, and is a top-choice university for prospective graduate students who are looking for a more intimate sense of community.
