At times the coursework is daunting and endless. You will write extensive literature reviews and essays that will make you ponder why you are on this path. But, you will run into professors that will enlighten your mind. I remember looking at the array of courses, initially fearing the math from budget classes, statistics in research methodology, and grasping public policy-making intricacies. Fast forward one year, and I love every class where each student engages in dialogue that spills over from the classroom to the workplace and even at home. What differentiates the master's program is learning and discussing material that affects your daily working life. The coursework opens your eyes to the actual world around you and not the constructed view that society provides. Most importantly, the foundation of Public Administrative knowledge equips students with the ability to understand public policy's diverse complexities. I could not have chosen a better MPA program.
Before choosing Cal State Northridge, I had friends at my alma mater (Cal State LA) enrolled in the MPA program. As I listened to their stories, I was nervous about joining the program. All my friends would detail is how many papers they wrote and how difficult their classes were. I later decided to move forward and apply for the MPA program at Cal State Northridge. My first class was brutal, but I was adequately prepared with an arsenal of Public Administration theories and theorists to fortify my thoughts with. After checking in with my friends at Cal State LA, I asked them theoretical questions that left them befuddled. Their classes never equipped the students with Max Weber's theory of Bureaucracy, Frederick Taylor's Scientific Management, and Woodrow Wilson's dichotomy of Public Administration. This was when I realized I made the best decision by choosing Cal State Northridge. Northridge provided a breadth of knowledge that would prepare me for life in Public Administration.
Everything in the curriculum is designed specifically for working adults and can be directly implemented to my full-time day job as an administrator. Every course is relevant, and detailed syllabi are provided to students have an expectation of how the term will look for them before starting the program. I am very excited to see what the next two years will hold before graduation!
