College of Medicine - University of Illinois at Chicago Reviews
Rating 4.2 out of 5 5 reviews
UICOM is a very renown school for its education. Specifically, the Chicago campus is located in a pristine environment that fosters networking with other nearby medical schools and hospitals. Within the classroom, the PBL system really allows you to develop your critical thinking and analysis skills. This is crucial for physicians to master in the dynamic medical field we see today. The school offers hundreds of resources for you to succeed in the academic setting. Their pass/fail system also allows you to focus on thoroughly learning the material and not focusing on the letter or percentage grade you will be receiving on the exam. This school adequately prepares you for the cooperative field of medicine by teaching you to work side-by-side with individuals of many different specialties and professions.
The school utilized team based learning which in my opinion is the ideal approach. Almost every aspect of medicine involves a team which is why starting this early on in your medical career is a huge advantage. There are very few direct lectures, and mostly everything is flipped classroom or core case style. This is a huge advantage because all STEP questions are framed as clinical cases, so it would be a waste of time to sit in only lecture based classes because you would never see information regurgitation questions on your exams. The only improvement would be to it’s Synthesis curriculum in the 1st year as some of the sessions are more cumbersome than helpful.
All of the faculty and Deans are approachable and have open door policies for any concern, whether it is academic or personal. Additionally, a lot of emphasis is put on the patient population directly surrounding the school which helps students go beyond the stereotypical cases presented in STEP and actually learn how to treat all patients as opposed to only the most common. The only thing that could make this school better is if they had more money for scholarships and improved facilities. Regardless, I do not think that impacts your education in any noticeable way.
