California State University - San Marcos Reviews
Rating 4.09 out of 5 33 reviews
The quality of education at CSUSM is superb. With small class sizes, students have excellent opportunities to learn and network in the classroom and on campus. The library is (I believe) the largest library in the CSU system, with knowledgeable subject librarians and access to a multitude of databases. Parking is VERY expensive; a little over $300 per semester. The food options aren't great, aren't cheap, and aren't very available, the university seems to think that people only eat between 11-3. Bring food with you, or at least snacks that can hold you over. CSUSM is playfully known as Cal State Stairmaster, wear comfortable shoes on campus, you'll get a good work out every day you're there!
The classes are interesting and through your thesis project you grow a lot as a researcher and scientist. However, you have to be sure that your advisor is committed to your success. About half of the students in my cohort are going into their fourth year in the program when this is slated to be a two year program. This is becoming a trend and I hope this is addressed soon. The faculty need to go through a course on how to properly train grad students to effectively complete a thesis. Many of us are drained by the end of the program and opt out of applying for PhDs. This leaves us with slim pickings in terms of jobs.
The academics there are very good, many students are always studying or trying to find a way to contact the professors to help them with homework or an exam. I have heard many great things from each major and their teaching styles that sound very comforting.
