The professors in Applied Mathematics are great. There are also brilliant professors in the Pure Mathematics area. They are very detailed and plan the curriculum out well. Professor Zhou and Melisa Hendrata are two of my favorite professors in this department. Zhou is one of the more difficult professors. He flies through the material and has high expectations for his students. His tests are demanding, but his grading is normally very fair. It is refreshing to have professors in the department that can push you to a new level of understanding.
Cal State LA is truly a great school. The courses are not as expensive as other schools, which is extremely helpful. The mathematics department is a smart and special community. Faculty and students in the department are friendly and creative. There are some true gems in the faculty for Applied Mathematics. They explain material well and offer a significant amount of help. The graduate program is small, so it is easy to get to know everyone in the program. The Math Club is also engaging, and the campus is great, as well.
