My experience as an undergraduate student and sociology major at Fresno state has been impactful in the most positive way possible. I have learned so much about the society we live and how each of our beliefs, opinions and decisions impacts the rest of the people around us. My sociology professors are passionate about what they teach because they are empathetic and because of this, I have been able to understand other people from other perspectives and standpoints even if it does not personally affect me, it can affect my neighbors, friends, family and peers. The department of social sciences is constantly encouraging students to get involved in community service work to get that hands on experience that relates to everything that sociology is. These opportunities have been able to help me get the involved and be apart of the internship program that I am apart of today which is the COSS-LINKED peer mentorship program where it has led me to meet other students in my major pathway.
I am thankful for my experience of being apart of Fresno state as it allowed me to value diversity in a way that I've never got to experience it before. I was able to find my true passion as I was able to see that many students like myself experience personal, familial and financial barriers that can make it difficult to navigate the educational system. I appreciate Fresno State for its special program and resources that allow for low income students likes my self to help better support first generation students who are trying to succeed and better our future. All of my professors since the covid pandemic have been extremely understanding, flexible, helpful and patient with us students when it comes to classes and course work. They have made it an enjoyable experience even through these difficult and hard times. I truly believe they want to see us succeed in our classes but also understand that life happens as well.
Unfortunately, I started at Fresno State during the pandemic. My graduate program had many wonderful opportunities (i.e., in-person labs) which made studying physical therapy extremely challenging. My program did the best that it could with the resources and restrictions that we had. Now that things are becoming “more normal”, my overall experience has been more enjoyable. I’m just bummed about the academic, professional, and enjoyable opportunities that were missed out on due to pandemic accommodations.
