The professors who teach in Boise State's Masters in Social Work program truly care about he success of students. The course content is easy to absorb and will be valuable once students enter the field of social work. However, the course load can be quite difficult to manage. There is a semester for students in the two year program where it is required to take 17 credits while still working at unpaid internships. This course load is overwhelming and requires the payment of additional fees even though there is no option to take fewer credits. That being said, the professors are well-informed, kind, and caring which makes for the delivery of a quality education. The education is very foundational, though. It is extremely helpful to supplement your education with free trainings that focus on subjects you are interested in.
Boise State's master's of social work program is one of the most inexpensive in the country, but that does not make it affordable. Social work programs tend to have much less funding than other programs; therefore, students in these programs have fewer opportunities for paid positions such as graduate assistantships. Scholarship opportunities are also quite limited in this field. This prevents all but the most privileged from attending the program as we are required to be in class and complete numerous unpaid internship hours which limits the number of hours a person can work in paid positions. Boise State does not seem to realize how much of a financial burden this is to students.
I am enrolled in an online cyber security master's degree program at Boise State University in which the faculty and professors strive to ensure the students have the resources, materials, and support we need to be successful in graduating with our chosen degrees/career paths. The course is solely online and asynchronous that fits a wide array of people's schedules, lifestyles, and availability which i love as I work full-time, am married with 2 kids, and have limited free-time to take nightly classes in the current pandemic we are all living through. With that said, the flexibility of this degree program is ideal for me and my family. Some things that would improve this online course experience would be increasing fellow student accessibility for commonly encountered questions/challenges as professor office hours, as well as aide availability is limited. This is one of the few critiques I have experienced taking a fully online course.
