Wichita State University is a great start for someone who is looking for a college and lives around the Wichita area. I grew up in Wichita and have always had a hard time fitting in. But at Wichita State University, I feel like there are many places where I could connect with others who share similar interests. I plan to finish my degree with Wichita State University and look for more opportunities that are made easily accessible by the university. However, my problem with WSU is the surrounding area and it does not have many sports. WSU feels limited in the freedom of students because Wichita surrounds it. This makes it harder to experience "college life", especially when I have grown up here. Also, I know there are complications with sports here, but I believe that we can bring back an amazing football and basketball team that can compete in college sports leagues. Still, I love this place, Go Shocks!
As a white male student from a small town I was hoping to experience living in an environment with true diversity for the first time in my whole life. I was thrilled to meet students with different backgrounds and find friends outside of the normal groups I had back home. After three whole years at Wichita State, this opportunity was rarely presented. Instead, what i found was seclusion and segregation. The freshman dorm halls- segregated. The extracurricular clubs- segregated. These are just the two best, and most prominent, examples of that. Regarding the faculty and education experience, my advisors are slow to respond when it is something I really need advice on. They tried to deter me from switching to a major that actually has better career opportunities and was something I found more passion in. I’m assuming because they were advisors for that specific major so it affects their numbers. Not to mention they stick me in online classes as much as possible and show very little care.
Wichita State University is a very welcoming and active campus! Anywhere you look, there is an event to attend, activity to join, or area to explore, and anyone is welcome to attend. With free students tickets to all events ranging from operas to basketball games, it is easy to get involved and make new friends. The teachers are dedicated to their students, ensuring you have everything you need to succeed in class. They are many resources to support student health, physical, mental, or otherwise. One thing that I would like to see change is the reinstallment of a football team.I love it here! WSU is my home!
