West Virginia University is a research institution focused on providing a world-class education to its students. The University is split up into 3 different campuses around the city of Morgantown and is connected by a Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) monorail system built in the 1970's. This makes access between the Evansdale medical and engineering campuses and the downtown main campus easy. Student housing and meal plans are overpriced and mandatory for incoming freshmen. Professors in all disciplines are engaged in some sort of research, and there are many research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. The professors are very good at their jobs, and are always available for office hours and are welcoming of in-class discussion of topics. It is well known that our sports are competeting in the highest level, from football, to basketball, to soccer, and rifle shooting. Hail West Virginia!
West Virginia University has a lot of resources for students who want to achieve and make the most out of their college experience. I love the study abroad program at the university- many exciting experiences await. But, I hate the party scene- it is worse than you hear, and that's pretty bad. You walk around campus and beer cans are lying everywhere, not to mention the filth that can be scene occasionally on the PRT- which is not reliable. Also, University maintenance should be more proactive in regards to cleaning, especially the dorms! Overall, the resources are good but the atmosphere is awful.
West Virginia University is a fun school with very good academics. Lots of social events and opportunities available, along with great support system for students in study groups, tutoring, and mentoring. In the past, WVU has gained a reputation for being a party school, but school is all about what you make of it. Sure, the partying opportunities are out there, as they are in any college setting, but it’s the decisions you make as a young adult that determine your future. So I go to class, I study hard and when I’ve accomplished those things, the university can be a fun and safe place to enjoy some down time!
