This college has a really gorgeous campus and a lot of fun opportunities that include floating down the river, a rock climbing course and beach volleyball among other things! Although I wish that there was more diversity throughout the campus, there are a lot of really amazing opportunities for leadership in diversity and equity clubs, along with other clubs and opportunities to help be apart of social change. The intramural clubs and sports have been really fun and UWEC has found a safe way for students to be involved in sports and activities during the global pandemic. I am a biochemistry major on a pre-med route and I have also been able to be a part of a lot of Pre-medicine preparation clubs and meetings, which have been very helpful in regards of what classes to take and where to volunteer to help me get to medical school.
I went to UWEC for my freshman year and half a semester for my sophomore year. Great school, beautiful campus, and friendly people. I think there could definitely be more diversity though. Most of my classes were predominantly white, Caucasian people and it was hard to find someone to relate to in my smaller classes. I would say it is a bit cliquey, although most people are open to getting to know others. They have a variety of food and a lot of them include Asian food, but the attempts by non-Asian cooks are mostly a miss. Not to worry though, there is pretty decent sushi to eat! The dorm I lived in wasn't the greatest, but it was manageable. If you live on upper campus, the hill and stairs are torture especially during winter. Many people would slip down the hill if it's not cleared of snow/ice. If you don't want to walk up or down, there is also bus transportation, but they get filled up quick during winter and it takes longer.
Overall I really enjoyed my time as an undergrad student at UWEC. The cost of tuition is inexpensive, and the psychology department is full of great professors and great learning experiences. I felt like there were a lot of opportunities to get involved on campus through clubs, hall councils, being a resident assistant, and through different immersion or learning experiences.
The cold can be pretty harsh through the winter, especially if you're walking up and down the hill to get to the dorms, or if you're crossing the bridge to get to the Haas or social work building. There are a lot of positives to living in a smaller college town, but at times Eau Claire can feel isolated especially if you're coming from a city.
Overall, I loved my experience at UWEC and feel like I grew a lot as a student, professional, and a human being.
