First of all, what i liked the most is the empathy the professors have towards the students. They also try their best to encourage and help their students in their academic journey. For instance, i'm a french major, and thanks to my french professor i was able to study a semester abroad in Canada. I can say my professors were the ones who motivated me into taking that step out of my comfort zone. They also helped me with the necessary documents like for example, recommendation letters. Apart from that, there are also other opportunies for students of all majors like internships, scholarships, exchange programs, etc.
Starting with the campus, the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez has a beautiful ecological campus contains a lot of greenery for you to enjoy. Mayagüez is a very welcoming city, I can assure you that you will make friends in no time. The university doesn’t have dorms so most students from around the island find a rentable apartment and share it with roommates or people like me who like their private space rent for themselves. It rains daily so don’t forget your umbrella. UPRM contains a great amount of amazing professors but as a normal college it has bad ones. You have to make sure to look up the classes and professors before each semesters tuition is due. There is a great student based website were you can look up professors and it provides ratings and tips from other students called Notaso. Tuition week is horrible since finding a class or professor you want is like an Olympic competition. This is the one thing the university needs to improve since the process is so unpleasant.
Most of the experience at the university of Puerto Rico as a whole comprises of you as the student having to not only do your job but also the professor’s, lab instructor’s and more than often the administrator’s. Some might say it helps build character but from what I can see by comparing other institutions it can sometimes hinder the students ability to develop since you do have to focus more on surviving all of the hurdles rather than taking what you’re supposed to be taught and formulate new questions.
