Graduated from UNCW in 1982 earning a BA in History. Read many comments and was shocked by the responses. Wow! My academic and social experience was incredible. Obviously, the university has changed since I attended - Enrollment - 3,000 students; 5-1 class ratio (Major); 2-minute walk across campus; 18 drinking age; no laptops, printers, phones, or internet. My generation used an item known as a card catalog, typewriter, a grease pencil and a thing called a vugraph machine. At times, academics wasn't always the priority as beer, parties, football, SGA, fraternity (TKE), girls and when time permitted - sleep. Balance was a must for academic success. The things "we" did would not be tolerated today. Things such as drinking on the roof of Galloway watching baseball, bribing compas security to overlook our pantie raids, our excess drinking binges and dumpster diving looking for the exam carbon paper. Today's UNCW students have no idea what they missed back in the day. What an experience!
UNCW isn't as large as many other UNC schools, but the opportunities available to students - learning communities, scholarships, research, study abroad, extracurriculars, networking - are incredibly robust, especially for undergraduates that might not know what opportunities to look for when they first start off! The Honors program helps its students take even better advantage of the resources that the school has to offer.
UNCW is not the most diverse institution. Their commitment to worldliness and diversity is vocal: things like demographic-based student organizations, encouraging every student to study abroad, and providing scholarships and the like specifically for minority groups. But this isn't reflected in the bulk of the student body, faculty, and administration. In my time there (and in the years since), UNCW has grown a lot in this area, though, and I hope that trend continues!

I enjoyed the abundance of student groups available to students. I was able to join 11 organizations each and everyone of them has changed me and I have had amazing experiences through all of them. Most of all, I love the study abroad department. I was able to travel to another country and make so many memories and even become the President for the 2023-2024 school year! However, I do hope that UNCW has a better evaluation and response system for faculty and staff. Many professors, academic advisors, and other staff don't communicate with students, give them the bare minimum of information, or don't want to help. It makes it feel unwelcoming at times and makes certain aspects of school harder.
