My last semester at the University of New Mexico - Gallup was one I will remember for the rest of my life. The second half was online and it was challenging in the beginning. I was set to only take one class online, which was an eight week course. When the pandemic began, after Spring Break, we began to have all online courses for the semester, so I was dealing with taking five online courses with a lab included in that. Once we had been in the second week of online courses, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. All my instructors were very patient and understood that some may have internet issues or they didn't have easy access to technology. Not only was it challenging for student but it was challenging for instructors as well, but we all took it day by day. The online experience always terrified me because I learn best when classes are taught face-to-face. In the end, I learned that online is also a great way to learn because of the constant changes of technology.
I first started at the University of New Mexico Gallup in August 2018. I lived in Gallup throughout my whole life and knew that I wasn't ready to attend a large university right off the bat. My mother and uncle had gone to the school and graduated with an Associate's from there, so I knew it was a good school to begin with, but I had to find out for myself. My first semester at UNM Gallup was amazing. Meeting with my advisors to set up a schedule was a breeze, everyone there is very welcoming and helpful. The staff there takes that one on one time to answer and assist with anything you may need, I loved that. UNM Gallup is a great place to begin the start of your college journey. The campus is easy to navigate and has every resource that you may need. Recently I just graduated with my Associate's in Liberal Arts and I couldn't have picked a better school to begin with. It prepared me for a larger university and what the college life is all about, it made me excited for the future.
The University of New Mexico Gallup branch is a good 2 year college start, if you want to see what college is about you can start there. Whether you are a adult wanting to go back to school or a recent high school graduate it is the best place to be and like there slogan says “stay close, go far.” The UNM Gallup branch does have a lot to offer for anyone wanting to get the education they deserve. The changes I would to see there would be more student parking spaces and more help with scholarships information.
