Day 4 of Insta-takeover with me, Julie Eisenberg Pitman @eisenbergpitman

My focus in Graphic Design at @umstamps was keyed on form, content, concept, typography, and color, all of which play into my collage work today albeit with a looser grid and a more fluid, semiconscious process. The Graphic Design Lab had just opened in 1993, with our first 2 Macintosh computers. Back then cutting with exacto knives and running our paper through the waxer to then meticulously press down into place for comps was a daily ritual. I believe that is where I fell in love with precision, cutting and pasting. Professor Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo was very influential during my years at art school. His smile, super calm, straightforward, welcoming and gentle manner of friendship and teaching inspired me to deeply look for design solutions that perhaps didn’t appear from initial sketching. He also sparked my love for Paul Rand and a very clean, simplistic, modernist aesthetic. Franc always stressed to never stop learning…
Perhaps my MOST celebrated union that @umstamps brought me was the happenstance meeting of my husband to be @MichaelPitmanMD ! He was studying at the The University of Michigan School of Architecture housed in the same building as UMStamps. Had we not met all groggy eyed at 7am at the North Campus coffee shop pre our 3 hour lab classes, I don’t know if we would have connected, married and had children together in the future! To this day our communication surrounding art and design is an on going love of dynamic conversation!
