The University of Maryland is truly a place like no other. Stepping foot on campus is like walking into an alternate universe. The students are excited, the campus seems to become more beautiful everyday and the list goes on and on. I have had such an amazing experience at Maryland so far and it can all be attributed to the spirit, culture and personality of the school. All professors are willing to lend a hand whenever needed and meeting new classmates each semester will always be one of my favorite parts. The classes offered are very interesting as they range from the psychology of happiness to Brazilian cinema, you can truly do it all here. I would not change anything about my experience this far academically but one thing I would like to see is a larger presence at our football games. We have so much spirit and we should all be going to cheer the players on! Other than that University of Maryland is truly a special place!
UMD College Park is a great school with lots of opportunities to learn, grow and get involved! This school is huge! The campus is beutiful and there is construction going on to increase student housing options. Although I do not participate in sports currently, I have attended a football game on campus and experienced a very vibrant and enthusiastic athmosphere during the game! Besides, you do not need to join any sports team to get a good workout around here. Just walking to classes can give you a pretty good workout every day! For fun activities outside of campus you can easily commute to Bethesda or DC, but there are plenty of places to eat and shop right outside of campus! I've had some amazing teachers and only one that was unprofessional. I prefer to take in person classes, but I have experienced online education as well over the summer due to limited class offerings. Overall, I recommend this school for the many advantages and great resources it can offer!
UMD-College Park was a great investment! As a transfer student from community college, I thought that I would have a hard time adjusting, but all the professors and people that I met were friendly. College Park is massive with plenty of local food options, cultural clubs, and things to do. UMD also has partnerships with local companies and you have a unique opportunity to fill your resume with real work experience.
In terms of academics, I was part of the limited enrollment graphic design program and it wasn't the best. There were times when the professors admitted that they really didn't know the material well enough and skipped over lessons or that the curriculum leaned more towards art history and theory than actual practice. If you're going to pursue digital/graphic design, I would opt for the Strategic Design & Innovation Fellowship Program at the Smith School of Business because they produce more portfolio-quality pieces before graduation.
