It's a big school so it was a little difficult to transition into my freshman year, but once I looked at the different resources and organizations the university offered, I loved it! It's really important to get involved while you're there. I was involved in different pre-law organizations, ASUC, Cal Cheerleading, and others and it was a great experience. It's a little difficult getting classes especially in your first or second year, but once you declare your major it's a lot easier. My major advisor Lauri is the best. She's super helpful and has made my time at Berkeley a lot easier. I would like to see an easier way for students to enroll to classes they need easier. I would also like for the university to recognize cheer as a sport so cheerleaders can have access to academic accommodations, as they are at all the sports events and have hours of practice per week.
In my experience at University of California Berkeley, the blissful nature encompassing the university had me feeling included in the school. The nature is like my second home and Berkeley is covered with them. During my visit to Berkeley, my family and I went to many places such as the cities and stores that surrounded the buildings. My sibling’s dormitory had a great access to the town’s parking and coffee shops. While in Berkeley, my sibling reminded me that everybody is not here to “compete with you,” but you build a community to help everyone through troubled times. I can relate to this since my high school is competitive in sports and education. Moreover, through my sibling’s experience, I should compete against myself because I know myself, my interests, and have the ability to overcome obstacles. As the saying goes by Mandela, “It always seems impossible, until it’s done.” I would love to expand the university’s art programs because UC Berkeley has chances to improve!
Going to Cal was a great experience! I came in as a transfer student. The learning curve was steep; thankfully, other transfer students like me were in the program, and we always had study sessions. I was grateful for the dedicated TAs in my program, and my professors were passionate about what they teach.
I was lucky to live in Martinez Commons the first year. The Bay is EXPENSIVE, so use your Thai food leftovers and rent out the living room to decrease apartment costs.
Overall, the experience was challenging, beautiful, and a chance in a lifetime. If I could go back, I would care less about people's validation, dating people who aren't great, or comparing myself to others- it was an unproductive energy-sucker. I would focus more on sleep, studying, and being authentic without fear of judgement.
