UC Berkeley has a variety of student experiences academic opportunities. In terms of common/popular majors, seeing from my first year, many students study Computer Science/EECS, Data Science, Psychology, or Pre-Haas (Business).
However, one of the biggest disadvantages of the Berkeley/Bay Area area is the high cost of living. In addition, UC Berkeley only guarantees dorm housing for first-years, so figuring out arrangements for off-campus housing in the future is a burden many students have to face early into their college experience. But as long as you stay on top of your research, and keep in mind your budget, that can be overcome.
Overall, the key to success at UC Berkeley is awareness. Be grounded in your goals and taking the initiative to reach them!

I am currently a college sophomore as I write this so it might not be the most all-encompassing review. However, I am very grateful and happy to be at UC Berkeley. Although my experience has had its hardships, there are many amazing experiences and opportunities in store at Cal. I have had the pleasure of meeting many kind and intelligent friends, colleagues, professors, and faculty. The campus is also beautiful and there are many activities/extracurriculars to do outside of class. I would however say that it is very academically rigorous and that housing is definitely a struggle to find, but it is so worth it to go to this school! Please remember to prioritize your mental health and use the resources available on campus when things get tough. Overall though, I have no regrets about choosing this school to study at.
It has been a joy researching Berkeley and being able to attend for my freshman year. Everyone's so passionate about their academics and hobbies, and there's no short of geniuses on campus. Certain classes have academics that are much harder than the teaching level provided, but overall teachers are very excited to teach and are very helpful. It can be hard getting one on one time with professors because there's so many students though, so getting a letter of rec can be tricky.
When talking about aspects other than academics, there is work to be done. The campus food is good, but gets old really quick. There's so many restaurants in downtown Berkeley however that it doesn't really matter. The housing is hit or miss. Blackwell Hall is the best for freshmen, Unit 3 and 1 are good, 2 is alright, Foothill is nice but more far away, and Clark Kerr ... is Clark Kerr. Campus isn't the greatest but its very pleasant and convenient to walk through, so overall, Berkeley's been good so far!
