From Union College - New York

Since 1795, Union College has been defining—and continually redefining—what it means to provide a liberal arts education. We've been challenging convention, blurring boundaries and shaking up traditional thinking. We develop every student to lead with wisdom, empathy and courage, in ways large and small, now and across multiple tomorrows.

Union is a highly selective, private, residential, liberal arts college with engineering that is consistently ranked among the nation's top colleges. Set on 100 acres in downtown Schenectady, N.Y., Union is within easy reach of New York City, Boston, Montreal and outdoor recreation.

Our 2,150 students choose from 58 majors and minors. They engage with faculty and immerse themselves in research, internships and studying abroad. They create community through 130 student clubs and organizations, 26 varsity athletic teams (Div. III with Div. I men’s and women’s ice hockey), our unique Minerva Program and many service opportunities.

I really enjoy being a student at Union College because of the people.
Small community: welcoming, actively becoming more diverse, environment enables personal and professional growth, easy to be involved
Trimesters: useful for staying organized when everyone knows which week it is (x/10) and it makes studying abroad more flexible.
Disability services: A+, all of my professors have been accommodating.
Schenectady: good location (burst the campus bubble to visit the weekly farmer's market or walk downtown, get home during breaks from the new Amtrak station 5 min from campus, volunteer through Union's Kenny Center)
School pride: yes! Especially during hockey season
Friends: the best. lifelong. unique backgrounds
ResLife: old furniture, fun people (s/o to West College 3rd floor!)
Becker Career Center: great! Staff will go above and beyond to help you
Weekends: not always enough to do; parties 3-4 nights/week
Greek Life: big presence on campus; it's there if you want it

Union is a very special and unique place! One of the things I've treasured most about my experience were the professors. Not only are they impressive researchers, they are able to establish great rapport among students, and are a great support system both personally and academically. The career center is also great; they helped beginning first year with my resume, then later to secure internships (I even got a grant for $3500 for an unpaid internship at a non-profit), and finally to apply to grad school. On campus, there are plenty of things to do, from parties to Minerva events to free food. Off campus, Schenectady has tons to offer, and is becoming more revitalized every year. While there are plenty of the "typical" liberal arts college students (white, wealthy, Northeasterners), there is also a large international and diverse community to engage with. As a member of the LGBTQ community, I always felt safe, and built my own chosen family of fellow queer individuals over the years.
The highlight of my time at Union so far has been the clubs and organizations I have joined. Being able to meet such great mentors and students has been such an awesome opportunity to me. The minerva program at Union is also one of a kind and has been such an amazing experience. The Minervas host weekly events that are so fun and engaging such as "Fondue Friday" or a fall decorating event. I have found such a great community in the clubs I have joined and in the minerva program.

The academic experience at Union is great, as the professors are super engaging and they can really get to know you. Being able to talk directly to your professors to get the help you need is awesome. Union also has a great engineering program!
