The academics are amazing. Ask the upperclassmen which professors generally are open to research- it will help in the long run for graduate studies and internships. Research is very plentiful and many professors are willing to help out. This is the chance to work with large equipment and get your name on a published paper.

The students are another story. About 85% of the campus are privileged rich white students without the understanding of real world struggles. The other 15% of the campus population are the down-to-earth people. These are the ones that make Union a unique place to be. Many seclude themselves from Greek Life and create their own niches. Find like-minded people to make the experience your own. Change social scenes. Meet new people. NOT ALL Greek students embody the stereotypical Union student, so look for them!

It's easy to feel like an outsider, but faking to be a part of the 85% is harder than it sounds and can be lonesome.

I'd like to begin by saying that Union's professors are unmatched. Every professor I've spoken to is passionate about their discipline and students, even those who do not care about the class.
With that being said, the reason for a rating of 'poor' is the social environment Union provides. With no ability to get off campus, students are forced to pursue a party lifestyle in order to pass the time on weekends. This leads to a social scene focused on drinking, using illicit drugs, and hookup culture.
Union is a Greek-oriented school and the admissions office fails to let students know this previous to enrollment. The Minerva system is non-existent, with weekend events having maybe five students attend. Union has failed to implement other social outlets due to the fear of trustees pulling funding. This leaves the school at a crossroad of either allowing Greek life to continue and losing students who do not like it or pulling it all together and losing a major source of revenue.
Union College provides the serious student everything needed to succeed in the professional world. It taught me to be a better researcher and problem solver and, in the spirit of liberal arts education, broadened my horizons by encouraging study in other disciplines. After Union, I attended a large graduate school. Union set me up for success but I found myself missing the dialogue of Union classes and the close relationships I had with my professors. On Schenectady: there are some people who need more amenities, cozy cafes etc.... I personally (perhaps because I'm from upstate New York and perhaps because I've spent time in the military) thrive on adversity and find Schenectady to be a good college town. What I mean by this is that it doesn't give you everything, but rather forces you to look for what you want and appreciate what you find. I like its grit, appreciate its history, and also value the fact that it's situated close to the Adirondacks, New York and Boston.
