Some professors are average but many are absolute gold! This is a small college, so it's easy to work one on one with these amazing professors, which has given me a lot of valuable experience. Definitely the sort of place that requires you to have initiative - No one's going to push you to complete anything, but there are plenty of opportunities for those who look! The campus is beautiful; It sits on about 1000 acres of forest that you can explore! The queer community is alive and thriving here as well - plenty of room for expression!
Evergreen State College is a very beautiful school, and I'm not simply referencing the scenery. Living here is a dream, with the forest as my back yard and a beach just minutes away. I've been watching a family of deer grow up through the year and now I just cant imagine studying anywhere else after having such a refreshing view every morning. Aside from that, the classes are all uniquely different in the way they're taught and graded, but all still very accommodating. I'm never scared to ask for help here, and that's usually a problem of mine. Many of the classes here incorporate native history of the land into our learning, which is how I found how difficult NW coast form line is. My experience over the past 8 months has been filled with understanding staff, beautiful grounds, and plentiful recourses.
The community at Evergreen is wonderful! I've found it’s an amazing environment for LGBTQ+ folks, and have never felt more comfortable being 100% out and proud.
I tend to disagree with the way that Administration does certain things, especially advertising. Evergreen has a unique way of doing things that's not for everyone. When it works for you it REALLY works. Evergreen’s very student-driven. The flexibility means that for self directed/driven folks it can be VERY enjoyable and personally fulfilling!
Academically speaking, other than the larger 16 credit interdisciplinary programs there are a lot of unique options! These include Evening and Weekend classes, Independent Learning Contracts, Student Originated Studies, Study Abroad programs, and earning credits for Internships! Evergreen is a medley of options and opportunities, and while it can come across as chaotic and a bit confusing, once you get into the groove of it you can really, REALLY go places.
