What I love about Southwestern's Associates in Outdoor Leadership program as well as the college as a whole is that it is more affordable than any other college program I have researched. Professors and instructors are intentional and care about student understanding of materials and our success. The program I am participating in is very hands-on and focuses on experiential ways of learning, which is very beneficial to students who deal with ADHD, dyslexia, or other learning difficulties. It has provided me with confidence, technical skills, certifications, and valuable connections for future careers. If I could change one thing about this program, it would be to help the Outdoor Leadership program grow and find ways to raise awareness of the program because it is still relatively small. I am working on the side to support myself financially while taking classes full-time. Going to a college that is affordable is what has allowed me to experience college in the first place.
Southwestern is a great community. It has provided me with many opportunities in my life. Without SCC I'm not sure where I would be today. The faculty is by far the best part of SCC. They are helpful, passionate, and positive. They help get students where they want to go! The only thing I would change is some of the online text books.
SCC overall is a great college. I grad a while back from radiography/x-ray and the two instructors that taught me are still teaching, which says a lot. The clinical coordinator (Kim) is a bit of a stickler for the rules which is a pain when you are in school, but I really get it. She's in charge of a lot students and the hospitals have their own expectations and it would be a little chaotic without those rules. She still works in the field and I think she does CT as well. She really knows her stuff and will go out of her way to help you after class and in clinical even if she's already worked a ton of hours. She's really passionate about teaching and making sure we are confident and knowledgeable before we graduate. The other teacher just sends you to get a tutor if you struggle in her class and she never visited us in clinical but maybe that's not part of her job. I'm not sure. Overall great experience and I did well working at jobs not part of our clinical area.
