The thing that I love most about my school, and the reason that I chose it over the other 3 I considered -- there is an extremely strong sense of community student-student, professor-student, community members-community members. Due to the small class size (average is 12 - 14), professors and students form strong relationships that lead to excellently written and personalized letters of recommendation and other resources. Furthermore, professors and students are able to interact outside of the classroom since most professors live in or around Sewanee, including professors inviting students over to their homes for a home cooked meal. The general education requirement allows students to come in thinking they are interested in one thing, and realize that they are totally interested in another, and the switch between intended majors is simple. The bonds you make at Sewanee will follow you throughout your life, especially with the strong alumni network. In the words of poet William Alexander Percy, "it is so beautiful that people who have once been there always, one way or another, come back. For such as can detect apple green in an evening sky, it is Arcadia -- not the one that never used to be, but the one that many people always live in; only this one can be shared."
