Alum: I attended MSU as a minority student with about 40,000 in the total student body. This number was comprised of approximately 30,000 Caucasian students. As a minority coming from an urban background where most residents shared my race this was a culture shock. Programs are available to assist minorities but many were student organized and limited to University and Faculty based. I survived because of the Office of Supportive Services. I wish there was a similar program in the Colleges as well as the University as a whole. OSS provided counseling, employment and funding for minority students. It was very difficult understanding the accents of foreign professors and I wish they had more African-American professors on staff. That change alone would have been great to see as an aspiring scholar. As such, culturally would have been more aware of the dynamics of a classroom where I was the only student of color. Sophomore: The University of Michigan takes a lot of pride in calling itself the best university in the world, but while finishing up my sophomore year I could not agree more. There is such a healthy balance between challenging courses that make students competitive prospects in their next step in life and opportunities to destress and enjoy the "best years of our lives", from watching our football team win the national championship to simply receiving free treats around campus from staff. Junior: Western Michigan has been a great school for me so far, I am able to get all my academic, volunteer, organization work done prior to the weekend. Which allows me to enjoy my weekends but that comes along with constantly worrying about my safety. WMU has done a great job at adapting downtown the bar scene is growing with attempts to make downtown and outside of campus more lively. The housing is also nice, if you are more reserved you have an option of the valleys or if you are more social and outgoing you can live in the heights, the heights are great to meet new people and the valleys are perfect for wanting people around you in your designated major.... Sophomore: Ferris State University for me was a well around good experience. I came from a small town with nothing there so when I moved to my college town it was disappointing that there is not a lot to do in Big Rapids. We do have student events but the advertisement and the communication are horrible. The people who work at housing are one of the most nicest, helping people but the site is very confusing and there needs to be constant reminders for students instead of all the students having to callhousing20 times a day. Freshman: As a commuter to Adrian, I don't experience all the benefits Adrian has to offer, but the ones I do experience are amazing! I am currently a first year and adjusting to college life hasn't been the easiest but Adrian College has made it better and so welcoming. I've learned to adjust to classes. They're all different, every professor teaches differently and has other expectations than normal. Changes that could benefit Adrian in general would be some of the parking options. Some days parking lots are closed and reserved and can be hard to navigate. All the athletic facilities are super nice and even Arrington Ice Arena has a cool feature with the restaurant Wow above the ice. Sophomore: The campus is gorgeous year-round, but most specifically in the fall! Because of the large variety of biodiversity, autumn turns the college campus into a crunchy, multicolored wonder. The sustainability program drew me into coming to Aquinas; not only does the committee provide us with recycling and composting, but also terracycling, e-waste recycling, GoodWill donations, and so much more! Plus, there's a community garden on campus. Students are allowed 8 free therapy sessions each semester in the wellness center. The dorms are rather small but still livable. There's a grocery store within walking distance (roughly 15 minutes to get there) which is super convenient. You can't have toasters in the dorms. You can have an emotional support animal though! Although Aquinas is a Catholic college, I still recommend it to people who aren't Catholic or religious at all. No one will force you to participate in religious activities if you don't want to.... Alum: I loved everything about my time at Grand Valley - the campus, students, professors, sports, clubs, etc. While Allendale didn't have much going on, you were a short bus ride away from downtown Grand Rapids, which is an incredible city. Sophomore: An awesome school for those who love the outdoors and being close to everything on campus. All of the academic buildings on campus are within a 15 minute walk from my dorm, making getting to class very convenient even when the weather isn't great. The people I've met here are incredible, and the professors are extremely welcoming and available to help you with whatever questions or general advice you may want to ask about. As the school isn't located in or near a major city, there isn't a huge variety of stores or restaurants close by, but the students here make due with what we have pretty well. As for the nature scene; there is a wide variety of outdoor activities to take part in while living in this gorgeous part of the country - from skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and dog-sledding in the snow to mountain biking, camping, hiking, swimming, running, and more - whenever you feel like it! Freshman: Although I had a rocky start with housing and the Honors program I quickly learned that Saginaw Valley State University was full of kind students and amazing professors. Freshman: As of now, Kettering University has been an incredible experience for me. Before I even enrolled, what attracted me to this school was its co-op program, which provides students a paid, hands-on work experience in their respective major in addition to what they learn in classroom. Another reason this school heavily appealed to me was that it's heavily STEM-oriented, and I knew I would get the suitable education here in pursuit of a STEM career (and in turn, a worthwhile return on investment). Here, there is a place for everyone, which is reflected in the large number of clubs, events, and extracurricular activities.
