Freshman: My experience at Notre Dame of Maryland University has been quite the journey. Even though I am a freshman, my first semester was a rollercoaster of emotions and many obstacles that I was unprepared for. Alum: I attended the school of social work during a time when the university had been audited and dinged on it’s lack of diversity and inclusion. My earlier experiences were rife with unauthentic attempts at integrating more diversity and cultural humility. However forced, I appreciated the attempt at creating changes to reflect a scholastic environment representative of the student body. Respectively, my professors were very well trained, knowledgeable and supportive. The coursework was challenging and was a marriage of historical and modernized concepts making learning engaging and the material, palatable. Even more impressive was the school’s response addressing challenges in adapting to pandemic and events of sociocultural importance: UMB was swift, authentic, fair and efficient in mitigating impacts to students and learning . Graduate Student: I did the 5 year BFA/MAT program! I just graduated with my MAT in 2022. MICA has its ups and downs. My experience in undergrad was complicated because of COVID-19 closures and restrictions. But, the MAT program adapted well to all the challenges! The MAT program is incredible, full of amazing professors and your cohort becomes a lovely community. MAT did an incredible job preparing me to become a k-12 art educator. My classes explored strategies, theories, techniques, planning, and more. While the 3 internships (student teaching) allowed for excellent hands-on experience! The 5 year program can be hard to balance, as you start to take graduate classes while you are working on finishing undergrad. Some majors are more flexible than others to fit the requirements. MICA is located in Baltimore, which also has its ups and downs. Baltimore has a great art scene. Sophomore: Hopkins is great! There's always something to do - lots of student organisations, interesting classes, events, parties and places to go to in Baltimore. Labs are very open to taking on undergraduate research assistants. It is more of a struggle narrowing down potential activities to what I can manage than to find things to fill my time. Classes are interesting and a wide range is available. However, some of them are definitely challenging and take up quite a lot of time! It is also difficult to get and maintain a high GPA in most classes because everyone is super smart. Food options are not bad, it varies from time to time and depends on which dining hall but I'm mostly happy with it, and Baltimore has great food options. Dorms are also relatively clean and have good facilities. A disadvantage about Hopkins is the safety around campus, it is mostly safe but sometimes there are robberies or burglaries near campus.... Junior: Hood College is a perfect school for me because of the decent and not abnormal size of the campus, its view, its proximity from the downtown area, the access to the cities nearby, close area in access to my Aunt and Uncle's house, and more! Hood College was my #1 pick because the institution gave me an excellent financial aid package, offered great free services, gave me opportunities to get familiarized with the school by setting up "orientation" events in the summer and fall to attend, asked for less test scores and granted me additional incentives, and was easy to access through a phone call or a text message with their admissions counselor. A few things I would like to see Hood College change is their air conditioning quality given that some AC units in the dorm rooms have acquired mold and excessive dust that are prone to cause allergic reactions, access to different doors in the building (though they are emergency doors, we could maybe use them to get closer access when moving).... Sophomore: I will be completely honest that my first year was so-so. I was dealing with several issues at the time. However, my time here has only gotten better and better. The school is slowly improving in all means -- campus events/food, academics, and most importantly its mental health/counseling programs. I swear, you couldn't find any better sense of community somewhere else. The town itself is small and "Gilmore Girls"-esque, as I'd put it. While there's not all too much in-town, Middletown, Centreville, Easton, Annapolis are within very short driving distance. All big east-coast cities (except NYC) are 1hr30min away roughly. So, if you want to stay rural, just stay in or around town, but there's definitely opportunities for adventures to other places without much of a hassle. Graduate Student: Initially when I arrived here, it was just as covid-19 was ravaging and so we had to take all our classes online or virtually (with video conferencing). As hard as it was for me having just moved from Nigeria, it was the best for the safety of students and staff/faculty. However, it proved worthwhile as we devised means to work in teams while collaborating on classwork and assignments. Tutors were supportive as classes resumed in-person. Also, social events and extra-curricular activities resumed in earnest and the experience has just been great. With facilities and learning tools ever-improving at Morgan State with state-of-the-art buildings springing up all the time, this seems just like an academic home for most of us! I also like the fact that I have made life-long friends and engaged with top-notch individuals and cohort from various countries all over the globe. Freshman: I love Loyola the community is welcoming and kid. The university provides resources that are always available to any student such as the writing center and free counseling if needed. The professors are helpful to students with questions and the city of Baltimore that surrounds the school offers plenty of enrichment and entertainment. The only thing that I would ask for is more food options on campus, the food is good the options just get boring after a while. The Starbucks is awesome to have on campus. Sophomore: My relationship with UMGC started with a friendly and professional phone call, almost a year ago. Nothing like the usual recruiter phone calls students are used to; You know; the quick talking and OVERLY pushy recruiters that some Uni's use? The UMGC recruiter was the opposite. She was patient, personable, and professional. Without feeling rushed she helped me every step of the way. Unfortunately, some of the signup process is convoluted. I am eligible for decreased tuition. Unfortunately, the process for reimbursement is complicated. Despite having done what was required several times, it doesn’t always go through/apply the discount. And to receive the discount, one must go through this process each semester. Other: I attend Harford Community college as a dual enrolled student. I enjoy earring college credits in high school and saving money but signing up for classes can be difficult. It can be hard to get in touch with guidance counselors. Some English professors made the course harder than it has to be. Math test are taken using honor lock. It can be difficult to figure out how to use honor lock at first. Overall this community college isn’t bad. I’ve had opportunities to go on field trips and work with organizations like the NAACP. Freshman: My experience at Howard Community college has been nothing short of a pleasant experience. This fall I started my first semester as a freshman, and after talking to friends, I believe this college is as resourceful as your average state university in terms of academics and extracurriculars. As for my personal experience, HCC is the best stepping stool I could have to make the transition from high school to university smooth and easy. So far, my most recent and exciting accomplishment at this school has been earning a spot in the SGA as senator of the academic division. I am looking forward to running for president next semester! A project in progress I am optimistic about is my progress on starting the school’s first ever women’s empowerment club. Though students have easy access to tons of opportunities and guidance at HCC, there is room for improvement.
