Freshman: Prairie View A&M is an HBCU college that was built on a slave plantation. PV is the best place to be, study and figure out who you are! The professors and staff are all around amazing very helpful! The cafeteria ladies are even nice. Prairie View is my home away home and it’s like we all one big family. Every sport there is we all show out and show each other support! Everyone always says “Prairie View is a party school” but what they do not know is Prairie View Produces Productive People. Junior: I love that the classroom size is small, it's allocated to help each student individually. The professors are truly there to see you succeed, they all have an open door policy, including the dean. The rarity of that alone makes me more comfortable in my learning experience. We may be a small school but we are close knit, the professors actually know you by name. You are not just a student on a long list of names. I transitioned to HT from a major university and it was so difficult for me to fit in. The minute I walked on campus I was not only relieved to see so many people that looked like me, but the fact that everyone was so friendly. Alum: As a graduate of the Texas Southern University Jesse H. Jones School of Business and Honors College, I recommend this institution for all your higher education needs. Most of my professors and advisors were excellent, most of my learning facilities were modern and top notch, and Houston is such an amazing city with so much to explore off campus. The cost of TSU has gone up tremendously so I highly recommend applying to as many scholarships as possible! If you're out of state, I recommend getting Texas residency first for cheaper tuition which is relatively easy to do (do your research). Also the cost of living near campus has gone up tremendously so I highly recommend finding a roommate who has a lot in common with you to help lower the cost ... Iiving alone can be costly. If you can't seem to find a roommate with a lot in common with you, just find a STEM major. STEM majors usually spend a lot of time doing school related stuff ... barely see or hear from them.... Senior: I went to Jarvis on a summer scholarship program and was supposed to leave at the end of the program. When it was time for the program to end I was offered another scholarship to stay and attend the school year. I didn’t want to to stay because the school is small and it is in a little small country town. I am from the big City and use to the City Life. But, my mom convinced me to stay and except the scholarship. I was then offered a scholarship if I would stay at Jarvis to play basketball to represent the school. It was not my desire to play basketball because I had played my whole childhood and I was tired of playing. But, since I needed money to pay for school I decided to play and accept the scholarship. My sophomore year I became a cheerleader and received another scholarship. I am so glad I decided to stay at Jarvis because it’s like a family school everybody knows everybody. Junior: Texas College is a historically black university butis very diverse. They offer an array of services geared to anyone who desires a degree. School is offered at different times for those individuals with different needs. Traditional students can go to school during the day or evening. Then you have the Success Students, whose classes are offered during the evening for the working adults. This program allows that individual who desires to go back to school but also has to work to take care of their family. There is no age limit in going back to school so there are those students who are in there 70s in class with the 20 year olds. Everyone is so encouraging and uplifting to everyone.
