James Madison University

Alum: I loved going to James Madison University! I graduated in May 2018 with a major in Media Arts and Design (concentration in Interactive Design) and a minor in Art History. During my time at JMU, I was very involved in Student Ambassadors (tour guides), Madison Dance, and Alternative Breaks. As a black student, I was a little worried about attending JMU since the minority population is pretty small but I had a great experience. I never encountered any overt racism or felt any bias against me from my fellow students and professors. There were times though that I felt a little uncomfortable in the surrounding area of campus. I would occasionally see confederate flags, which left me feeling a bit cautious even though I didn't have any negative experiences (especially since I come from a very liberal and majority-black area). After graduation, I was able to find a job as a Graphic Designer within 3 months and I felt very prepared to complete the tasks that came with my job.

Alum: Like any place, CU has its upsides and downsides, but quite frankly the campus is large enough to find some incredible people and the professors do an absolutely amazing job teaching their respective subjects. Within the first couple weeks at the university I was able to join a student led parkour group on-campus which were my first steps in the hobby. Not only that, but I've met some truly passionate and engaging professors who were amazing at conveying their material. The professors really care about their students and I still correspond with a couple of them on occasion. The cherry on top is that the campus is beautiful! If you have a bike you can everywhere you need to be no time! The campus also have academic programs in the residence halls that lets students take otherwise large classes (200+ students) in groups of 20-30 student. Its a great school and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in a well rounded college experience.

Sophomore: Clark Atlanta University is an AMAZING institution. I am currently a rising junior and I can honestly say there is never a dull moment. At Clark Atlanta we turn up together as a family, and get our work done. I have a 3.8 GPA, and have already participated in multiple internship and research opportunities. I will say though, definitely MAKE SURE THAT YOU CAN AFFORD 4 YEARS AT CAU BEFORE ENROLLING AS A FRESHMAN. It is a very expensive price tag, and I will say that it can be frustrating when your trying to have fun but you do not have enough money to make it through the semester(s). However, if you work really hard in high school and get a solid GPA (3.25-4.0+) and make a solid SAT score (1,100+) you'll probably qualify for a merit scholarship. The main reason I was able to afford CAU was because of a Full Tuition Scholarship (My GPA was 3.7 & SAT 1200). All in all, CAU is AMAZING but choose a school that is AMAZING and affordable, and if thats CAU, well....SEE YOU SOON FELLOW PANTHER!

Sophomore: I love it at UofSC! There are a lot of programs to promote fitness so plenty of opportunities to exercise and stay active. Campus is big and pretty, there are a ton of food choices, and there are clubs available for just about any area of interest. The professors are nice, reasonable, accessible and want to actually help you succeed. The school spirit is great too, win or lose at sporting events. Football games are especially fun; large, loud and entertaining. The one thing I would change right now would be the Covid restrictions. They are stringent and therefore there are no student events happening, and intramural sports are quite limited.

Alum: Talk about being prepared for the real world. I switched my major half way through college to education and I didn’t realize how fantastic the education program here is. I was able to work with my professors in their research labs and impact my community through the opportunities I had here. Very diverse place. The Newman Center is top notch, the on campus jobs (and off campus downtown ones too) know their employees (and in my experience) will work with you so you can be a student while having an income. The community here is real and the school spirit might be more intense then high school musical. Not only that BUT THE CAMPUS- WOW. When I toured they told me it was the largest botanical garden in the state of Missouri... I didn’t need to question it because the campus spoke for itself. Everything is within walking distance (no car needed at least if you live on campus). 10/10 recommend.

Freshman: The Texas culture and Austin city vibes are very prominent at this university. There never seems to be a dull day since the city sights and diverse cuisine surround the campus at walking distance. And if it's a bit far, an Austin city electric scooter is definitely somewhere nearby as a fun alternative transportation method. The view of the Texas capital reminds Longhorns that this campus is a catalyst for change. The only qualm I have has to do with the small dorm rooms. But there are several apartment buildings near by that are top quality. And to make things even better, Austin bus transportation is free to UT Longhorns. If you are still hesitant about UT, take a tour of the campus or ask another current Longhorn about their experience to really get a sense of the community and lively energy I'm talking about!

Junior: Alabama State, in my opinion is a great HBCU! The student body and staff act as a family. We have great staff members that really show a great amount of support to students. There are minor things about the school such as how they choose to spend the money around campus and with financial aid. We need another dormitory because we have so many students that attend! When it is time to apply for housing it is complete war! Once housing runs out there is always a long waiting list to see who ends up not showing up to their room when school starts back. My experience freshman year with housing was that the online portal to housing had crashed and my friend called me and told me there was no more housing within the first 5 minutes it had open. They hosted an apartment fair! I couldn't afford that. I went all summer applying to other schools to transfer. Thankfully last minute I got housing two weeks into the school year! One thing about this school you have to be quick to get a room!

Graduate Student: Great college! Only reason not giving 5 stars is related to issues due to the pandemic. Classes were 100% online. Instructors are well versed in their professions and encourage critical thinking of students. For the social work program many papers and presentations are expected. There were options to take specialty classes such as grief and geriatrics. The program is very well put together requiring a 3.0 GPA at all times. Graduation ceremonies can be confusing and not as organized as the program itself. Some of the instruction I found to be below the graduate level. The social work program at this college particularly tends to be liberal rather than conservative. Much of the material used is bias. The social work program at Louisiana State University is a small program with about 20 students per class. The college requires a full internship to be completed before graduation. The college atmosphere is busy. Parking for this college is poor and needs lots of restructuring.

Junior: I only just started at the University of Arkansas last semester, fall of 2020. So far, I would say that it's been a lovely experience! I'm majoring in studio art, so my classmates have always been supportive and provide helpful feedback. My teachers have also been amazing. They provide critique, while also hyping up your work as well.
What I like about the University is that the college feels welcoming. I first attended NWACC, a community college. While going there, most students didn't talk to one another. It seemed like people were there to just get their work done and leave. Quite the opposite happens at the university! I've witnessed people become life-long friends just in the one semester I've been a student.
The teachers are very helpful and want you to succeed. During fall of 2020, I had some personal issues come up and I let my teachers know. They extended due dates of my projects and helped in many other ways as well. This university wants you to succeed!

Alum: When I arrived freshman year, I did not know ANYONE- I was the only person from my hometown and 1:15 from my entire state! I had a brief transition month where I was trying to find my way but overall, I felt everyone was warm and welcoming, eager to make new friends. Because SMU is so small, you start to see that people clique up into small groups based on their sorority/fraternity/club/major/activities. But by senior year, those walls got broken down. Even though cliques and small groups exist, it is not a closed membership experience- everyone is welcoming and seeing people on campus or at a bar is exciting and engaging. Of course, you have the people who think they are superior and will be stand-offish and rude... but that is every college. AND those people are the social-climbers who are insecure. SparkNotes version of this post: I had a huge group of true and amazing friends, excellent relationships with my professors, and a driven, work hard/play hard environment. GO HERE!

Alum: Talk about prestige! Not only for Black students , but for others who come and excel in engineering, nursing, vet school and so many more degree programs. I was a product of Basil- the building that built me into the best nurse I could have ever imagined being: strong, confident, intuitive, special, and driven! Tuskegee gave me a grounded education and solid nursing sisters to go through the program with. I "balled" laughing with the friends I made on the yard and "parlayed" down the ave during the times I was free from studying. Nothing takes away from the experiences I enjoyed, whether it be winning the freshman talent show, joining the Golden Voices Concert choir, being a contestant in the Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant, joining the 1st Black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., serving as treasurer of my beloved sorority, joining the Women's Glee club and graduation itself. There is so much to see, experience, and enjoy in the pride of the swift growing south!

Alum: I really enjoyed my experience at UVA. Not only did I make more lifelong friends, I branched out and took the first few steps towards becoming an adult. I got a job, and for the first time in the life, I had to balance the stress of a job and schoolwork. Talk about adulthood! Not only does UVA have amazing places for students to study, they also have an arousing nightlife if you just want to take the night off. The Corner was always my favorite place to hangout because it contained my favorite restaurants: Bodo's Bagels ( I normally got the sausage and egg on plain bagel), Roots (I normally got the El Jeffe), and The White Spot (their signature burger is de-lish)! If I could go bac to undergrad, I would not do anything different. I had so much fun at UVA, and I had awesome friends that I made memories with.

Freshman: I have loved my time at UMiami so far! There is a great party scene here if that is what you are interested in, but if you're not, you will fit in here as well. While the party scene is fun, there is not much to do in the local area around campus. There is a Dennys, Starbucks, McDonalds, CVS and TGI Fridays within walking distance of the school, but other than that, you need to Uber or have a car in the area to get around. This gets pricey after a while, especially during spring break!
There is a very high standard for academics; even during the Pandemic and online classes, teachers modified their lessons and adapted well to the change. Professor have multiple qualifications and experience.
I was not satisfied with the food on campus. The breakfast at the Mahoney/Pearson dining hall was good, but all of the other meals were poor. Lots of other campuses that I visited had a lot of food options to choose from, but UMiami only has a few.
I had a lot of issues with my residence hall.

Senior: Academically, UF is a great school. However, it is very competitive, and if you make it in, you will absolutely be pushed. I have found that the level of support you get from faculty really depends on your major--when I was in a large degree like biology, I felt left behind and replaceable (my current major is wildlife ecology and it is AMAZING). UF does have some great programs in place to help you succeed, but you are expected to pursue those on your own--no one will be checking in on you or holding your hand. Just like any big university, UF is a business--you are an academic and financial asset.
Professors here are brilliant, and most of them want to help you. There are fantastic study abroad opportunities, scholarship opportunities, and well-run extracurricular clubs. DON'T stay on campus or get a meal plan!

Academically, I have been able to take part in courses totally outside of my specific major and has helped hone in on my creative side through classes like theater. Lastly, professionally I've been able to work alongside my college career as a co-op which has resulted in me getting work experience even before I graduate and better prepared me for the time after graduation. Junior: I know it's been a hot topic recently, but I would like to set the record straight. This school is by no means perfect, like all other colleges there are plenty of flaws, but it is truly one of the best options for an undergrad university that you could choose. Despite what rumors may have indicated, most of the students are incredibly friendly, academics are superb, the town of Lexington is adorable, extracurriculars are treasured by nearly every student. Unlike some of the schools I have previously attended, W&L is an incredibly close-knit community full of passionate and hardworking students. It is considered "cool" to be smart, and students at W&L work and play hard. Also, If you are considering playing a sport here- DO IT! As a student athlete I have had an incredibly valuable experience and the woman on my team will likely be close friends for the rest of my life. I simply love this school- of course it is not perfect, but no school is.

Sophomore: Alabama A & M University provides a realistic environment for students to grow and develop. Some universities allow you to simply drift through the coursework, this way students are not taking anything away from the courses. The professors at Alabama A & M University push students to their fullest potential teaching valuable lessons that are able to be carried on through the long term. The campus also provides a sense of community, which is vital when hundreds of students are many miles away from their families, allowing the feeling of having a home away from home. Yes, this is a historically black college, but this campus encompasses a melting pot of cultures, all coming together to create one big family. Becoming a bulldog has assisted in equipping me with the tools necessary to become a successful adult, even offering internships for every major so students have a solid foundation to land on after graduating. Of course, every campus has room to grow, but I love my HBCU!

I explored a variety of subjects and transferred internally mid-way through my undergraduate career to focus on a business degree at Wharton, with a computer science minor. The school emphasizes pre-professionalism, providing many resources for corporate career development but also placing a lot of pressure on the student body. The student climate was compettiive, and students often spent most of their time with their extracurricular groups. Other teachers seemed like they couldn't really care less whether you actually learned the information or not. My studios were great, and most of the studio professors were part of the former group, while several of the support courses were taught by the latter. I am part of the architecture school and some of my experiences with the administration were confusing, specifically regarding the 5-year Master of Architecture program. Sometimes I felt as if my particular class year was being pushed under the rug, as there have been several changes of administration during my time here. To give them the benefit of the doubt, the administration do their best to try to keep us informed of such changes and try to be transparent about them.
