Graduate Student: I am an older student. I am a 63-year-old female who returned to complete my bachelor's degree. I would like to see other older people commit to finishing, or just getting a degree. There are many young students but I think there is a common misconception that senior citizens or older people do not want to return to college. I would like to see the college encourage them to do so. I have talked to many senior citizens who compliment me on my courage of going back to college. As we get older, I feel like social security is not going to fulfill our economic needs. Therefore that is one of the reasons for completing my bachelor's degree. The other reason was a personal one. I just wanted to complete it. I stopped and started many times throughout life but decided this was the time to finish what I had initially started many years ago. Junior: I love that it’s such a big school! It’s hard to imagine not having such a large and beautiful campus to walk around during the day and all the space also allows for there to always be something going on. There are so many events and clubs and large Greek life. There’s also several Divine9 sororities and fraternities and multicultural Greek life as well. Even if Greek life isn’t for you, there are many clubs that make you feel like family. Education is so important and valued here. There’s also many networking opportunities and again, just so many helpful events and because it is a big school, they’re always prepared for many people to attend so it’s less of an overwhelming experience. The renovated dorms are very nice and since it’s a college town, there’s a lot of nice off campus living options. In particular, the political science and gender and women's studies programs - as I am sure with others - provide ample opportunities for students to get involved in research, internships, and professional development outside of the classroom. The vast majority of professors I have encountered are genuinely invested ins student success, especially once you get o higher level small discussion courses. While a large school also means large 100 and 200 level course lecture halls most professors in the social sciences are open to meet regularly with students. Alum: The campus is beautiful and full of life. The community is strong! Students are constantly holding protests for better treatment of workers, and change has come from these protests. The one thing I would like to see change is the attitude of some of the staff in the psychology department. I remember being a doe-eyed freshman walking into that building only to leave in tears after the front desk worker belittled me when I came to her looking for guidance. I changed my major after that; I couldn't bear the thought of having to deal with people like that for 4 years. Sophomore: The campus is beautiful, for starters. Good food, great professors, a wealth of different class types. I joined the Collins Living Learning Community my freshman year, and that was a great way to make a huge university feel smaller when I needed that comfort. My major complaint about IU is that it seems like academic success is socially discouraged. There are week-long quiet hours during finals, and there are quiet hours in the dorms every night, but these rules (as well as rules about disruptive drinking in dorms) are not enforced, meaning that people who actually need to study need to either go elsewhere or grin and bear it. Sophomore: I love the sense of community feel to the school. I like the medium size of the school where you don't feel like a number. The academics are pretty strong, especially the engineering and the CSB programs. Lehigh is also known to have a really good alumni network and really good financial aid packages for those who want need-based opportunities. It does get pretty cold but you'll get used to it. However, it is a slight culture shock that many rich people attend the school but the social scene I feel is fine but is centered around Greek Life, however, you'll find the people you like! The surrounding area is okay, I feel the Northside of Bethlehem is better but not at all a dangerous area, still pretty safe for the most part, just be aware of your surroundings. I am also a minority too and I feel that the political and racial climate is fine, but there is still some microaggressions one can face but I never have felt unsafe. Sophomore: Overall, the college feels like a home outside of home for me. The campus is walkable, safe, and almost every spot is full of greenery, the student and teacher population is diverse, and despite "just being a local college", I feel and am inspired by countless students and educators passions! And, the amount of free stuff I've gotten that I actually use is over 70%. But, it's not all positive. First of all, safety. I feel safe, but it isn't the case for everyone, especially when it comes to female students and teachers. Due to being an open campus, people experiencing homelessness have and regularly caused trouble, and so far, little to no action has been taken to ensure security. Second, organization. Senior: Absolutely amazing experience at UD. I passed up so many 'higher' ranking schools to go here, and I am so happy I did. In engineering, both academically and professionally I have been able to push myself as far as any other school in the country—and am now working with numerous people from top notch & Ivy League schools. UD led to 5 fantastic internships with Fortune 500s, international non-profits, and cutting edge research groups. At the same time, I have been able to develop a well rounded personality and enjoy the 'college experience.' The neighborhood built of just students is very cool. The campus is beautiful, the city is unique & accessible, and the campus has great food. Highly recommend getting to know the Marianists who run the University, and getting involved with their impact on the local community and world.
