Graduate Student: I started at UNC Chapel Hill in August 2023, and only a week or two after beginning campus, there was an active shooter on our campus. Luckily, I had just left to go home from class, but students were climbing out of windows, huddled together in classrooms, while a professor was gunned down and killed. Not very long after, there was another alert that there was an armed and dangerous person near or on campus. So, safety-wise, I wouldn't say that it's the best. Sophomore: I really enjoy the numerous clubs on campus, they are a great way to get involved and meet people. There is no Greek life so joining a club is a great way to feel part of something greater than you. Additionally there are a lot of in campus employment opportunities if you are looking to make money on top of class. The food is pretty good and it is all made on campus. There are plenty of options and the dining hall hours are sufficient. Alum: My experience at Wake Forest is something I would never go back and change. Junior: FSU has a beautiful campus and outstanding athletics. The student body is very diverse and is known as one of the friendliest campuses in the country. The academics are very challenging, but ample tutoring and help is available. The sciences need more professors and better professors and more course offerings. This is something the school should really focus on. Dorms are typical dorms, definitely need dehumidifiers to avoid mold issues. The Greek life is very robust as is the club scene, but plenty of other activities to do and clubs to join outside of those. Alum: Looking back on my experience, I feel as though I didn't appreciate everything Hamilton College did for me. When you're in the moment, it's easy to see all the bad and be frustrated with things like the crappy campus food, a poor party scene, and a major lack of diversity. But, looking back, I do miss my time at Hamilton. I miss living in a walking community, I miss all the free food and free merchandise the school gave me. I miss the diner. I miss having small classes and being close to my professors. The community there, although not perfect, came together in moments that mattered. The school could be better. The lack of accountability from the administration on social issues and a constant battle between hate speech and lack of punishment for students who harmed others was a constant in all my 4 years. Junior: I have absolutely loved my experience at The Ohio State University for these past two years. Freshman: Current student — I can say I am thrilled so far with my time at Wesleyan. Professors and classes are amazing, the people are great, the campus is beautiful, and the school is in a nice place where I can feel like I can focus on my studies but still make my way to Boston/NYC by train quite easily. Also, the open curriculum is very freeing and exciting — there are too many interesting classes and I can't take them all. As for getting into classes I want, I have had no trouble. Freshman: The community here at CWRU is very close-knit so everyone generally knows each other or has mutual connections. This creates a very welcoming and comforting environment for newcomers to find a friend group and communities that they like. As the campus is in Cleveland and the area itself doesn't provide a very interesting life for students, the school board called the University Program Board tries its best to keep the student life very lively. Sophomore: First the professors and class environments are amazing. I feel like I can genuinely ask my professors for help both in personal and school related matters. They're extremely compassionate and really just want you to do your best. Dorms are nice. They're spacious but have their issues like any dorm is going to have. The food system is atrocious. Alum: Academically challenging school that heavily focuses on STEM majors. If you are in liberal arts, there is a nice community but it is small and not nearly as funded as the STEM programs. Campus is walkable filled with nice community spaces and plenty of libraries, cafes, and rooms to study and meet with classmates. A lot of school spirit centered around the athletics. Most people live off campus starting second year. The apartments in Chauncey Square are an excellent location and close to night life spots and restaurants. Campus is very diverse and there are many opportunities to join clubs and student groups. Purdue is only 1 or 2 hours away from two different international airports, and shuttle busses run nearly everyday between those airports and Purdue campus, making travel easier for international or out of state students. Some things to note: -The academics are much harder than I thought, prepare to be working for most of the week. -Despite some people saying this is a "party school", the parties don't live up to the hype. The institution certainly has its faults, as does any, and I think that some Smithies are quick to make negative judgements of the college due to the bubble we're in that can limit our perspective in the grand scheme of higher education across the country.
