Alum: My experience at Cal Poly was overall amazing! My major was liberal studies, which was an amazing program. I feel more prepared and excited than ever to go into education, especially with the variety of classes Cal Poly has within each of their majors. Cal Poly also has a HUGE amount of clubs that were incredibly fun and engaging, especially in my first couple of years before the pandemic! Although I had an amazing time, there are absolutely some systemic issues in Cal Poly; racism and microaggressions, misogyny and homophobia (especially experienced by women in STEM majors), food quality, underfunding of campus mental health support, etc. Although in the past five years I have seen campus legislation attempt to address some of these problems, cal poly has a very far way to go to create fully accessible and safe learning environments for all of their students to thrive. Sophomore: Cuesta was a great starting experience right out of high school to get a taste of college level courses, student life, and campus. Staff and faculty were great and always helpful, and there are plentiful resources aiding admissions, financial aid in AND out of school, job opportunities, career development and more. The current Cuesta website, as well as MyCuesta and Canvas, can all use some updates regarding contact information and site navigation, but once you get rolling it’s easy as pie. I’m an Art Major but it’s simple to change your major, navigate classes, review professors, and get in touch with counselors. Freshman: I love the atmosphere here! Everyone is friendly and I really like my professors. Theatre and English are my favorites. The books for classes are so interesting and how our classes and assignments go are pretty interesting and engaging. I wish they had a program to help with books and main supplies. They have been helping with food and some financial aid. But I really wish they could help with supplies, because that can really add up fast, especially since a lot of students have to work a lot to have enough for it. Junior: Moorpark is a great college with a lot of options for classes and great programs. I am currently enrolled in their radiologic technology program and it is so amazing. The professors are great and the program really makes you prepared to work in a hospital setting. I also did my pre requisites for the program at Moorpark and have received a Associates from Moorpark College. The only change I would like to see if counselors who are more helpful and caring. Sophomore: Feather River College is a great community college to go to within California. It is best for in state students as the Promise Grant allows people to go there for free for the first two years but otherwise the tuition is not much. The campus culture could be more tolerant of minorities (there's no violence but there is bad talk) but is overall very accepting and welcoming. Senior: Cal Poly is an amazing school, there is a lot of problems with it when it comes to the size of the campus and the difficulty of the classes. However, I think overall going to CPP has been great and I have become a better person because I went here. Some professors are worse than others but I have met absolutely some of the best professors ever here and even some of them helped me get into the professional career. I think if you go to college seriously and want to really better your life this is a great school. Freshman: I recently started at Bakersfield College after being out of school for 20 years. To say I was nervous to return to college would be a huge understatement. Graduate Student: I attended VVC, since 2018 and was able to complete two degrees. The campus is full of helpful resources and so many programs to help you get through college comfortably. All programs had such great mentors and counselors that help you stay focused and confident in college.
